Abstract:
The therapy they used was EMDR - Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing. During an EMDR session, therapists have patients recall the traumatic event. Then they rapidly wave their fingers back and forth in front of the patients' faces.
EMDR proponents believe the finger-waving stimulates right-brain, left-brain activity, enabling patients to process memories of traumatic events and alleviate associated emotions of rage, terror and depression.

In this workshop important aspects of the treatment, with EMDR as the main approach, of
chronically traumatized children and adolescents will be discussed. What are the
necessary conditions to be present or to be created in the preparatory phase of
treatment? How much and what kind of stabilization is needed as the bottom line before
trauma processing by EMDR can be initiated? An overview of empirical studies on
treatment effects with this specific population will be discussed. Using video fragments,
we will clarify how EMDR can be embedded in multifaceted treatment programs in
different treatment settings. The question will be dealt with how parents can (not) be
involved in order to reach optimal treatment outcome.

chronically traumatized children and adolescents

Veel van de kinderen die in hun vroege kinderjaren herhaaldelijk zijn blootgesteld aan traumatische ervaringen, worden uit huis geplaatst. De gevolgen van de traumatisering zijn meestal ernstig en vergaand doordat het de organisatie van de in ontwikkeling zijnde hersenen negatief beinvloedt. Voor herstel van complex trauma is individuele traumagerichte therapie niet genoeg. Kinderen hebben heel veel nieuwe (herstellende) ervaringen nodig om weer vertrouwen te krijgen in zichzelf, de ander en de wereld om hen heen. De thuissituatie biedt hiertoe de beste mogelijkheden mits de opvoeders goed af kunnen stemmen op wat het kind nodig heeft.
De training ‘Zorgen voor getraumatiseerde kinderen’ biedt opvoeders en begeleiders onmisbare informatie over de effecten van traumatisering op het dagelijks functioneren van hun kind en de relatie die zij als belangrijke volwassene met hun kind ontwikkelen. (Pleeg-)ouders en andere belangrijke volwassenen in het leven van het kind kunnen hierdoor meer doen aan het herstel van hun kind en raken minder snel uitgeput, wat de kans op (nog) een uithuisplaatsing verkleint. De training is gebaseerd op recente wetenschappelijke inzichten die op een overzichtelijke en concrete manier zijn verwerkt in o.a. powerpoint dia’s, casusbeschrijvingen en oefeningen. De training is oorspronkelijk ontwikkeld door de National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN). Leony Coppens en Carina van Kregten hebben de training bewerkt en vertaald voor de Nederlandse situatie.
In de workshop is aandacht voor de eerste ervaringen met de training in het veld. Daarnaast wordt er ingegaan op achtergronden bij de onderwerpen die in de training aan bod komen en kunnen deelnemers aan de workshop ervaring opdoen met de oefeningen uit de training.
Many of the children in their early childhood repeatedly exposed to traumatic experiences, are from their homes. The effects of trauma are usually severe and largely because the organization of the developing brains negative influences. For repair of complex trauma trauma-focused individual therapy is not enough. Children have lots of new (healing) experience needed to regain confidence in themselves, others and the world around them. The home must establish best opportunities provided educators tightly to vote on what the child needs.
The training 'Caring for traumatized children "provides educators and counselors indispensable information about the effects of trauma on the daily functioning of their child and the relationship which they consider important to their adult child development. (Foster-) parents and other significant adults in the life of the child can therefore do more to restore their child and become less exhausted, the chance of (still) a placement reduces. The training is based on recent scientific insights in a clear and concrete way to digest in PowerPoint slides, case studies and exercises. The training was originally developed by the National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN). Leony Coppens and Carina of Kregten have the training edited and translated for the Dutch situation.
During the workshop's focus on the first experiences with the training in the field. In addition, examine the background to the topics covered in the training are discussed and participants in the workshop experience with the exercises from the workout.

The use of EMDR with younger age children presents extra challenges for
the practitioner who often needs to include the child’s parents/carers as a resource in the
treatment process. Parents /carers can become the child’s spokesperson through creating a
narrative of the child’s story. Based on the work of Joan Lovell, the EMDR protocol is
assimilated and adapted to suit the diversity of each child’s unique experience through the
process of story writing where the traumatic events are digested and processed with the
help of the protective parental figure(s). The presentation will illustrate through the use of
clinical material (video; drawings; collage; etc) how the practitioner can develop a multitude
of creative means to access the pre-verbal or the severely traumatized young child; for
whom we need to step “outside the box” and transform the EMDR protocol to suit each
child’s needs.

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is a relatively new form of psychotherapy for post-traumatic symptoms of relevance to systemic therapists. The literature available on individual EMDR in traumatized children is reviewed in this article. A sample of eight studies was examined, consisting of three controlled trials, two uncontrolled studies and three case reports or series. The controlled trials compared EMDR with waiting list controls or cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). The study samples were small and their methodological quality variable. In all the studies, the results suggested a positive effect for EMDR but did not appear superior to CBT. It is therefore possible that systemic interventions may be improved by the integration of EMDR and family therapy with children and adolescents.

de type I et II. Si un nombre considérable d’études évaluent le traitement des traumas de type I par
l’EMDR, apportant des preuves solides de son efficacité, rares sont celles qui ont investigué spécifiquement
le traitement EMDR des traumas de type II. L’auteur examine aussi l’effet de l’EMDR sur divers
symptômes et difficultés. Elle donne enfin des recommandations pour l’application clinique de l’EMDR,

This paper provides a summary of all items that have studied the EMDR treatment of children and
adolescents traumatized. The effectiveness of treatment is determined by more than fifteen studies. this
article examines the effects of EMDR on traumatic stress in children and adolescents after trauma
Type I and II. If a considerable number of studies evaluating the treatment of type I trauma
EMDR, providing strong evidence of its effectiveness, few have specifically investigated
EMDR trauma treatment of type II. The author also examines the effect of EMDR on various
symptoms and difficulties. She finally gives recommendations for the clinical application of EMDR
and for future research.

This article provides a summary of all the studies that have investigated eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) treatment of traumatized children and adolescents. The effectiveness of the treatment is revealed in more than 15 studies. This article considers the differences between Type I and Type II traumas and specifically examines the effects of EMDR on traumatic stress experienced by children and youth following Type I and Type II traumas. There is a considerable body of research evaluating EMDR treatment of Type I traumas, showing strong evidence for its efficacy, but there are few studies that have specifically investigated EMDR treatment of Type II traumas. The effect of EMDR on various symptoms and problem areas is also examined. Recommendations are made for the clinical application of EMDR and for further research.

vidence Based Practice is the new standard in the field. However, the evidence base regarding trauma treatments for children, particularly young children, is in the early stages of it's evolution.
Recent research related to the neurobiology of trauma, implicit and explicit memory systems and the impact of these dynamics on trauma treatment will be discussed. Treatments with a large evidence base, such as TF-CBT and EMDR will be discussed with a view to how many of the treatment goals can be accomplished and more easily digested by children through the vehicle of play. It is critical that practitioners who serve traumatized children be able to match interventions to treatment goals and symptomatology. Specific play therapy interventions will be tied to treatment goals in an effort to help practitioners expand their repertoires with child-friendly interventions based on the latest research.
The treatment areas covered in this workshop will include helping the client to
1) re-establish a sense of safety and security,
2) learn and practice stress inoculation strategies,
3) identify and confront faulty attributions related to the trauma,
4) restructure distorted cognitions related to the trauma and
5) create a trauma narrative.
Several play therapy interventions will be explained and demonstrated for each of the aforementioned gaols. Children accomplish the hard work of healing from trauma in a gentle, fun and safe treatment milieu. Case vignettes, slides and video clips will augment the didactic presentation. Experiential methods will also be used. Participants should come prepared to play!

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is a recently developed psychotherapy method that appears to increase efficiency in treating traumatized psychological disturbance. Applications to child treatment were explored in five case studies of children suffering from post-traumatic symptoms several months after Hurricane Andrew. Subjects were treated with one or two EMDR sessions, until Subjective Units of Disturbance (SUDS) went to 0. Follow-up parent interviews at one and four weeks post-treatment found all subjects returning to pre-trauma levels of functioning, with additional improvement in some cases. EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) has proved to be an independent, effective, and empirically validated approach for the treatment of chronic post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in adults. This work provides an overview of the status of research into the use of EMDR in traumatized children and adolescents. The available randomized controlled studies are summarized and assessed for their methodistic value. The empirically supported and effective treatment is described. The results show - albeit on a narrow empirical basis - that EMDR, when used in children and adolescents, demonstrates a Comparable effectiveness in symptom reduction and efficiency (limited treatment duration) to that observed in adults. Issues relating to the integration of the treatment into the existing care structure are discussed.

Mit Videoeinspielungen von drei unterschiedlichen Therapiesitzungen, wird die kindspezifische

Aspekte erläutert (EMDR-Setting - Traumascore PROPS - Ressourceninstallierung

Abstract: EMDR ist als ein effektives und ökonomisches Verfahren zur Behandlung von chronischer PTBS bei Erwachsenen anerkannt. Dieses Poster verdeutlicht die Effektivität von EMDR bei psychisch traumatisierten Kindern und Jugendlichen. Die kontrollierten Studien sind inhaltlich und in ihrer methodologischen Güte beschrieben und ausgewertet worden. Es sind sowohl singulär traumatisierte Kinder und Jugendliche nach einer Naturkatastrophe bzw. einer Explosion, wie auch sequentiell traumatisierte Kinder und Jugendliche mit sexuellem Missbrauch und Gewalterfahrungen behandelt worden. Alle Studien weisen EMDR als hoch effektiv aus. Dies gilt gleichermaßen für die Reduktion der PTB wie auch der komorbiden Symptome (Depression, Angst). Bemerkenswert ist, dass in den beiden Behandlungsvergleichen mit bewährten kognitiv-behavioralen Verfahren EMDR bei gleicher Effektivität signifikant effizienter war. Dies repliziert Ergebnisse aus dem Erwachsenenbereich (van Etten & Taylor, 1998). Obwohl die geringe Anzahl an Studien die Generalisierbarkeit der Ergebnisse einschränkt, scheint EMDR über alle untersuchten Alterstufen hinweg ein einheitliches Wirkprofil vorzuweisen.[Author abstract]
EMDR is recognized as an effective and economical method for the treatment of chronic PTSD in adults. This poster illustrates the effectiveness of EMDR with psychologically traumatized children and adolescents. Controlled studies are described and evaluated in terms of content and its methodological quality and has been. They are both singular traumatized children and adolescents after a natural disaster or an explosion, as well as sequentially traumatized children and adolescents treated with sexual abuse and violence. All the studies point out EMDR to be highly effective. This applies equally to the reduction of the PTB as well as the comorbid symptoms (depression), anxiety. It is noteworthy that cognitively in the two treatment comparisons with best-behavioral procedures with the same effectiveness of EMDR was significantly more efficient. This replicates results from the adult participants (Van Etten & Taylor, 1998). Although the small number of studies limits the generalizability of the results, it seems EMDR track record across all age groups studied a single-action profile. [Author abstract].

Abstract:
This study evaluated the effectiveness of up to five 60-minute sessions of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) for children (ages 8-12) who had suffered one or more traumas. Participants (N = 48) were randomly assigned to either an EMDR experimental group or a waiting list control. They were provided treatment by one of five therapists, all of whom were experienced, independent clinicians having received Level 2 training in the EMDR technique. The therapists followed Shapiro's protocol for children and were in 90% compliance with the protocol. The participants were carefully screened according to Shapiro criteria. This study was unique in that it included an integrated outcome measure (UCLA PTSD Index), consisting of an assessment of PTSD criteria and a rating of symptoms, reported by both parent and child. Analysis of pre-post changes consisted of two 2 x 3 ANCOVAs, one each for the child and adult report. The analysis of covariance revealed a main effect for the covariate (the pretest total PTSD Score), a main effect for group, and a significant group x time interaction effect, for both the child and adult report. Post hoc (Scheffe) analysis revealed that participants maintained the benefits of treatment at 1-month follow-up. [Author Abstract]

De behandeling van chronisch getraumatiseerde kinderen vraagt om een lange adem. Op de eerste plaats is natuurlijk de veiligheid en een aanwezige hechtingsfiguur voor het kind van belang. Dit klinkt vanzelfsprekend, maar is in de praktijk vaak moeilijk te realiseren en/of vol te houden. Een goede samenwerking met gezinnen/pleeggezinnen, collega’s en collega instellingen staat hierbij voorop. In deze presentatie willen we jullie ‘imaginair’ meenemen naar onze kliniek en jullie kennis laten maken met de manier waarop wij zoeken naar het meest geschikte behandelklimaat en de meest geschikte behandelvorm voor deze kinderen. Hoe wij hierbij gebruik maken van verschillende behandelmethodieken (Greenwald, Spierings, Struik) om uiteindelijk tot een geïntegreerd behandelmodel te komen voor deze doelgroep. Wij zullen ingaan op o.a. de volgende aspecten: de werkrelatie met deze kinderen en alle betrokkenen, het aanleren van coping, traumaverwerking en hoe je dit als team van hoofdbehandelaren en hbo-behandelaren op de klinische groep vormgeeft.
The treatment of chronically traumatized children requires a long breath. In the first place, of course, the safety is present, and a figure for attachment of the child's interest. This sounds obvious, but in practice often difficult to achieve and / or to maintain. A good partnership with families / foster families, colleagues and fellow institutions is paramount.
In this presentation we want to 'imaginary' bring to our clinic and you get acquainted with the way we search for the most appropriate treatment environment and the most appropriate form of treatment for these children. How we make use of different treatment methods (Greenwald, Spierings, Bush) to produce a single integrated treatment model to qualify for this target group. We will share our vision with you about the impossibilities, but also the possibilities in the treatment of these children. We will discuss among others the following aspects: the working relationship with these children and all those involved, the teaching of coping, coping with trauma and how this team as head of therapists and clinicians on the clinical HBO group shape.

Abstract:
Twenty children and adolescents were treated for a single traumatic memory with a single session of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR). Treatment was delayed 1 m for half the group. Over half of the 20 participants moved from Clinical to Normal levels on the Impact of Events Scale, and all but 3 showed at least partial symptom relief on several measures at 1-3 m following a single EMDR session.
Results should be interpreted with caution, but were positive, and essentially consistent with analogous findings of EMDR with adults.

Tragische Ereignisse wie der Krieg im ehemaligen Jugoslawien haben bei der betroffenen Bevölkerung tiefe seelische Wunden hinterlassen. All das hat das Zusammenleben der verschieden ethnokulturellen Gruppen stark erschüttert und ist meistens nicht mehr möglich.
Die Kriegs- und Traumaopfer leiden häufig noch Jahren unter den schlimmen Folgen der Extrembelastungen. Typische „posttraumatische“, psychische Folgen sind das ständige schmerzliche Wiedererleben der durchlittenen Situationen, Alpträume, erhöhte Schreckhaftigkeit, Reizbarkeit sowie Auswirkungen im sozialen Bereich. Diese Symptome werden seit 1980 unter dem Begriff Posttraumatische Belastungsstörung (PTB) in den offiziellen Klassifikationsmanualen psychischer Störungen zusammengefasst (DSM-IV-R, 1994).
The history books about the wars paint a terrible picture of horror. Experienced reality is not printed pages, we read, but the fear, pain and suffering that will accompany us for the rest of our lives. Tragic events like the war in former Yugoslavia have left deep emotional scars, the affected population. All this shook the coexistence of different ethno-cultural groups is not strong and more usually possible. The war and trauma victims often suffer for years under the terrible consequences of extreme stress. Typical "post-traumatic", the constant psychological consequences are painful reliving of the artist went through situations, nightmares, increased nervousness, irritability and social impact. These symptoms are grouped together since 1980 under the term Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTB) in the official classification manual of mental disorders (DSM-IV-R, 1994).

This document presents an individual case study focusing on the qualitative application of the Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) treatment to PTSD in a latency-aged multi-traumatized child. Theoretical, empirical and clinical descriptions of PTSD and EMDR are presented in order to understand childhood psychological trauma and its treatment. Further, an explanation of childhood psychic trauma is presented to distinguish between single event trauma (Type I Trauma) and multiple exposure to psychologically overwhelming events (Type II Trauma) as defined by Lenore Terr. Child abuse and specifically sexual abuse is described as an example of a Type II trauma that is closely related to the development of post-traumatic symptoms and reactions. EMDR is selected as the main cognitive behavioral treatment to help reduce PTSD symptoms in an 11-year-old male who has witnessed and experienced numerous interpersonal stressor related traumatic events.A clinical review of the child's EMDR focused treatment is summarized in a total of twenty-five sessions that follow Shapiro's EMDR 8-Step Treatment Model. Qualitative changes to the standard adult EMDR protocol made by the treating therapist are presented to illustrate how EMDR can be modified and adapted to work with latency age children. The results of the study suggest that EMDR may be a useful adjunct to an overall treatment plan aimed at ameliorating the traumatic symptoms and developmental difficulties associated with PTSD in children. The author emphasizes the need for the clinician using EMDR with children and adults to constantly target and assess the impact of present stressors and their role in the maintenance of PTSD symptomatology. De zes testen helpen de therapeut om te beslissen of een kind verdere stabilisatie nodig heeft en hoe dat te bereiken, voordat met EMDR gestart kan worden. Aan de hand van casuïstiek wordt dit proces en het gebruik van stabilisatietechnieken gedemonstreerd. De kinderen moeten technieken leren om emoties te reguleren en stress te verminderen. Dan wordt het hechtingssysteem geactiveerd, zodat ze stress kunnen reguleren door steun te zoeken. Zo vermindert de noodzaak tot dissociatie. Door problemen die het kind ervaart te koppelen aan ervaringen in het verleden wordt het kind gemotiveerd om naar de trauma’s te kijken en met EMDR te starten. Dan worden nog aanpassingen in het EMDR protocol besproken voor dissociatieve kinderen om ze in het desensitisatie proces te houden en wordt besproken hoe EMDR kan worden geïntegreerd in een gefaseerde behandeling.

The stabilization and treatment of these children can be complicated. Obviously, creating a safe environment and an attachment figure is a first step. But what then? These children sometimes seem to function properly. Their avoidance strategies are effective and they refuse to talk about the trauma or say they are forgotten. They have no more trouble. But the seduction of the therapist and then to wake sleeping dogs is dangerous. For among these seemingly well-functioning exterior, is a constant alert, anxious and lonely child. This child can not attach and the lack of secure attachment is devastating for the development. This is often visible only by explicitly to search.
In this presentation I will "The six tests" demonstrate a stabilization method for children and an adaptation of the three tests (Spierings, 2008). The six tests help the therapist to decide whether a child needs further stabilization and how to reach before EMDR can be started. Using case studies this process and the use of stabilization techniques are demonstrated. The children must learn techniques to regulate emotions and reduce stress. Then the attachment system is activated, so they can be regulated by stress to seek support. Thus reduces the need for dissociation. Due to problems experienced by the child to link past experience the child is motivated to look at the trauma and EMDR to start. Then further adjustments to the EMDR protocol for dissociative children to discuss them in the desensitization process and discusses how to keep EMDR can be integrated into a phased treatment.

First you start with diagnostics course of dissociation. By then the problems the child experiences to link past experiences, the child is motivated for treatment. Then the six steps of the method of stabilization (safety, peace in everyday life, improve adherence, emotion regulation, and self nutshell) explained. Then discusses how EMDR can be integrated into a phased treatment for these children and what changes in dissociative disorders.

Abstract:
The cost and benefits of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) on children who have endured trauma was reviewed in an effort to answer the following question: can EMDR, an established therapeutic tool for trauma recovery with adults, address the needs of children who are experiencing the after effects of trauma? This literature review included research on the brain, repercussions of trauma, and the process of EMDR treatment. A case study of an eight year old boy attending a psychiatric day treatment program depicts both childhood trauma and EMDR treatment and indicates that EMDR was an effective treatment modality for this boy with a history of abuse and neglect. The client's drawings indicate a reduction and release of trauma following a session of EMDR. These findings are congruent with much of the available literature.

The focus of this 1 1/2 hour presentation will be on using EMDR to alleviate the emotional distress of children who have been
severely traumatized. Participants in this workshop will learn:
(a) assessment tools and strategies for selecting children who would most benefit from EMDR therapy.
(b) selection of appropriate targets for intervention.
(c) an EMDR protocol to reduce the possibility and/or degree of abreactions.
The presentation will first define "severely traumatized child" and how to conduct a careful assessment of coping skills used by
children who have been severely abused with specific focus on dissociation. Dissociation will be defined and keys to understanding
dissociation in children will be discussed.
Next, steps to deciding how to select appropriate children for EMDR will be delineated. The presentation will then cover red flags
and cautions before proceeding with EMDR and how to introduce and inform the child and his/her parents/managing conservators.
The workshop will discuss specific EMDR protocols to reduce the possibility of and/or intensity of abreactions, to enhance positive
cognitions, and to facilitate the incorporation of dissociated material and concepts. Scripts of case examples will be used for
teaching.
