Abstract:
Little is known about the types of mental health treatment that are most effective for psychogenic non-epileptic seizure (PNES) patients who have high rates of comorbid post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and dissociation. Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) has proved to be effective in the treatment of PTSD, anxiety states, dissociative symptoms and somatoform disorders. This study, which utilized a non-controlled qualitative multiple revelatory case design, integrates EMDR into the psychological treatment of PNES patients with confirmed trauma experiences. With EMDR targeting trauma and dissociative symptoms in three patients, PNES were extinguished in two. Those patients have remained seizure-free for 12-18 months. Abstract:
Whether eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) causes reactivation of epilepsy is as yet unclear. A 34-year-old woman was treated in an inpatient multimodal psychotherapeutic setting with EMDR for PTSD resulting from sexual harassment and for a moderate depressive episode. She had been diagnosed with idiopathic generalized absence epilepsy in childhood, but had experienced no seizures under lamotrigine medication since 1999. After the second EMDR session, clinical seizures in the form of absences occurred, and were validated by electroencephalography. The seizures ceased after medication with benzodiazepines and an increase in the lamotrigine level. She underwent four more sessions of EMDR treatment successfully without further seizures. Possible triggers are discussed, especially as to whether EMDR treatment played a role in reactivating epilepsy. Further research and publications on the application of EMDR in epilepsy patients are needed.

Abstract:
The recent literature on conversion seizures suggests that they are not only traumatic but dissociative in nature. In two cases, the presenter has found conversion seizures to be manifestations of infant alters. The presentation will convey, by lecture and videotape, the treatment of a remarkable client and how EMDR, Ego-State Therapy, and somatic interweaves were seminal in treating conversion seizures to remission. The video illustrates AIP and Porges polyvagal theories’ expression in infant trauma and will illustrate how the therapeutic relationship and increased compassion between parts of self are avenues for the transformation of attachment injury in EMDR.

A phased model of treatment is recommended for the treatment of people who have experienced repeated and multiple traumas and who may still be facing ongoing stress and threat. Establishing a sense of safety and stability is the first stage of treatment before any exposure work can begin. This can be particularly challenging when treating refugees with complex PTSD presentations. This interactive workshop will explore treatment approaches to establishing a sense of safety and stability in preparation for trauma focused therapy. Case examples of torture survivors, victims of trafficking and domestic abuse will be presented to illustrate some of the difficulties in this stage of treatment and interventions.
The workshop will promote an understanding of:
•Complex PTSD presentations in refugees and asylum seekers
•Stabilisation and symptom management in preparation for trauma focused interventions
•Managing dissociative flashbacks, dissociative seizures and sensory/physical flashbacks
•Cognitive techniques for managing shame, guilt and self blame which may be barriers to exposure work

Abstract:
We present a case illustrating the use of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) in the treatment of psychogenic seizures. These seizures were events lasting many hours, necessitating frequent emergency room visits and an extensive medical work up. Given the patient's history, PTSD was diagnosed. EMDR is widely used as a treatment modality for PTSD, and the patient was referred for once-per-week treatment, with complete recovery after 18 months of therapy. The impact of her recovery on her quality of life was astonishing. This case supports the notion that EMDR can be an effective alternative treatment for psychogenic seizures, especially when the history reveals a traumatic event or abusive experiences.
