Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of EMDR use with juvenile delinquents, such as improvements
of physical and mental mal-adjustment, emotion control, self-recognition and attitudes toward others. It also examined under which conditions in the judicial proceedings, it is possible to apply the EMDR therapy to juveniles. Methods: Three
delinquents whose cases were in the Family Court process, were selected as participants in view of effectiveness, safety
and validity. The measurement scales are as follows: (a)IES-R, (b)the Life Gram ( a wavy line drawn by the participant to
describe one’s own life from the birth to present in the range of +10 and -10.), (c)SUDs, VOC, (d)self-reported impression by
the participant, and (e)observation by the writer. Self-tapping on knees under the instruction by the writer was used as the
bilateral stimulation. Each participant was interviewed four or five times during 4 weeks. Baseline measurements were done
on 1st or 2nd interview, while post measurements were done on 4th or 5th interview after the EMDR session was held on
3rd or 4th time. Results: Results showed clear improvements by one EMDR intervention in two cases out of three. Insufficient
care could be the reason for the absence of improvement with one participant. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest
that the EMDR is effective for the improvements of the various symptoms and problems of the juvenile delinquents, if being
properly applied on the certain guidelines set for them.

Homicide perpetrators present a high prevalence of major mental disorders,
particularly major depression associated with a substance diagnostic, and
schizophreny (Cote & Hodgins, 1992). Recently, it has been suggested that
the homicide behaviour itself may be conceived as a traumatic event
generating multiple symptoms (Gray, et a1., 2003; Pollock. 1999}. This study
assesses the relations between homicide and traumatic stress in a Belgian
prison population, on the basis of a self-report questionnaire (SASRQ).
Therapeutic implications of the results and relevance of EMDR practice in
homicide populations will be discussed.

Along the same lines, evidence-based assessment and interventions must be in line with the
finding of how significant the subjective impressions of sexual assault are for incarcerated
older adults in treatment. A promising intervention that is being piloted in the criminal
justice system with younger age groups is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing
(EMDR). EMDR specifically targets change in subjective units of distress among trauma
survivors, particularly sexual abuse survivors, which in turn reduces post traumatic stress
symptoms (Kitchiner, 2000). Moreover, previous research with incarcerated juvenile
offenders shows that EMDR can work in reducing post traumatic stress reactivity resulting
in less violent behavior and conduct problems among samples. Its utility for older adults,
especially those with histories of sexual assault victimization and perpetration is perhaps a
promising intervention. The use of evidence-based practices suggests that untreated trauma
and grief are related to increased adult recidivism rates (Leach et al., 2008). Therefore,
treating psychological distress and untreated symptoms effectively, which involves both
screening and treatment that captures subjective experiences, may help to break the cycle of
recidivism and in some case sexual offending. [Excerpt]

Pubers en adolescenten, leeftijd tussen 12 en 18 jaar kennen intensieve, snel wisselende ontwikkelingsfasen waarbij het veel afstemming van de therapeut vraagt hoe hij of zij contact kan aangaan met de jongere en zijn ouders.
Deze jongeren komen slechts zelden met een eigen hulpvraag bij de GGZ. Meestal trekken de ouders aan de bel, soms school, soms een andere hulpverlener.
Om met adolescenten te kunnen werken is het essentieel dat we aansluiting zoeken en vinden bij de jongere zelf en hoe die zijn probleem ervaart, ook al kan deze probleemdefinitie lijnrecht tegenover de aanmeldingsreden staan. Als er een hulpvraag is gevonden die erkent kan worden door de jonger zelf en door zijn ouders/opvoeders heeft de behandeling meer bodem om te kunnen starten.
Een indicatie voor EMDR-behandeling vraagt altijd om goede voorlichting en uitleg. Bij jongeren speelt vervolgens mee dat de identiteitsontwikkeling en de daarmee gepaard gaande onzekerheidsgevoelens er vaak aan bijdraagt dat EMDR als een “ vreemde gang van zaken” wordt beschouwd. De therapeut moet genoeg vertrouwen in zichzelf en de therapie hebben om de jongere ook het vertrouwen te geven om in proces te durven gaan. Soms gaat dit in golfbewegingen.
Het effect van de behandeling kan om dezelfde reden ontkend worden door de jongere zelf ( er zijn dingen veranderd maar dat kan natuurlijk nooit komen door dat rare gedoe, dat komt vast door die nieuwe verkering die nu zo gelukkig maakt) en belangrijk is dan om ook de context van de jongere erbij te betrekken. Ouders, brusjes of/en vrienden en school kunnen belangrijke informatiebronnen zijn om een goede inschatting te maken over het eventuele effect van de behandeling.
Timing wanneer een EMDR-behandeling kan starten zal rekening moeten houden met schoolvakanties, proefwerken, PTA’s, (examen)feesten…omdat het belangrijk is om niet teveel risico te nemen op verbreking van het verwerkingsproces.
Teenagers and adolescents, aged between 12 and 18 years have intense, rapidly varying stages of development where it is much matching the therapist asks how he or she can enter into contact with juveniles and their parents.
These young people are rare with an own demand for care in mental health. Usually the parents pull the bell, school sometimes, sometimes another helper.
To be able to work with adolescents is essential that we seek and find connections with the young people themselves and what they are experiencing problems, even though this problem definition are diametrically opposed to notification reason. If there is a demand for care is found to be acknowledge by the younger self and his parents / guardians, the more soil treatment to start.
One indication of EMDR therapy always requires good information and explanation. Among young people is then that the identity development and the associated uncertainty feelings that often contributes EMDR as a "foreign affairs" is seen. The therapist must have enough confidence in himself and the therapy to the young people the confidence to dare to go to trial. Sometimes this in waves.
The effect of the treatment can be denied for the same reason the young people themselves (there are some things changed but that can obviously never get through the crazy stuff that is established by the new traffic that is so happy) and also important is to the context of the younger involvement. Parents, siblings and / or friends and school information important to a good estimate on the possible effect of the treatment.
Timing when an EMDR treatment will have to start with school, papers, PTA's, (exam) parties ... because it's important not to take too much risk of breaking the process.

Every 15 seconds a woman is beaten in the U.S. Many of these women meet the criteria for a diagnosis of PTSD. Some of them end up in prison. This study used a sample of 5 battered women, incarcerated in a Southern state prison, to test the efficacy of EMDR following relaxation training. A-B-C designs were used to compare baseline assessment (Phase A), relaxation training utilizing Miller and Halpern's audiotaped instructions (Phase B), and EMDR (Phase C). A script of the worst memory of abuse was dictated by each woman during assessment and read by the researcher at the beginning of each session. The Beck Anxiety Inventory and Impact of Events Scale, measuring avoidant behaviors and intrusive thoughts, were given weekly, following the script. Client logs and measures of SUDS and VOC were taken during the EMDR phase only. A one-month follow-up was used. ANOVAs with repeated measures comparing 2 groups, E1 (n = 2) that received 3 weeks of relaxation training prior to EMDR and E2 (n = 3) that received 6 weeks of relaxation training prior to EMDR, were not statistically significant. Avoidant Behaviors scores approached significance for the main effect of treatment (F = .06) and for the group by phase interaction (F = .08). Due to intrasubject variability, blocking was used to identify trends. A distinct improvement was noted in Subject 2 -- Anxiety dropped from 36.5 to 8.0, Intrusive Thoughts 27.5 to 11.0, and Avoidant Behaviors 27.0 to 24.0. Individually graphed data and calculated mean scores by phase permit further investigation. Implications for future research include appropriate screening for dissociation and development of coping skills prior to EMDR, decreasing avoidance by having the woman read her script aloud prior to completing outcome measures, monitoring medication during treatment, continuing treatment as needed, using additional outcome measures, and employing a multi-baseline design across subjects, matching women on several demographic variables. This study examined the efficacy of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) on inmates with developmental disabilities (DD) who were incarcerated in a special needs correctional facility in the southwestern United States. Cognitively, these inmates ranged from borderline intellectual functioning (BIF) to mild mental retardation (MMR), and all suffered from PTSD-like symptoms. A repeated measure pre- and postanalysis design with one sample group was utilized. The Emotional Problem Scales (EPS), Impact of Events Scales - 8 Items (IES-8), Validity of Cognition Scales (VOCS), and Subjective Units of Disturbance Scales (SUDS) were used to gather quantitative data on the 17 volunteer participants. Baseline and outcome data were collected by an independent assessor. The T-Test was incorporated to analyze the data and determine significance. Due to the small sample of convenience, the data were skewed, so the researcher also used the nonparametric Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. Descriptive data on EMDR were collected and analyzed.As measured by the SUDS, IES-8, and VOCS, the statistical findings revealed self-reported reductions in levels of distress, avoidance, and intrusiveness of the traumatic memory, and an increase in self-esteem and the believability of positive cognitions about self and the event after the application of EMDR. However, the clinical scales from the Self-Report Inventory (SRI) of the EPS did not reveal any changes after the application of EMDR. Staff familiar with the study volunteers also reported a significant decrease in clinical pathology and an increase in prosocial behavior, as measured by the Behavior Rating Scale (BRS) of the EPS. Findings suggest that the utilization of EMDR with persons having developmental disabilities may have clinical utility. Thus, further research in this area is warranted. [Author Abstract]

In this case study we describe the nature of the crime, the evolution of the offender’s pathology and cognitive reprocessing procedure that was achieved through psychodynamic and cognitive interventions.
To overcome any difficulties that a prison setting imposes on the treatment process we have thought to make this treatment option entirely voluntary, with the subject beeing offered not other‚ incentive‚ than a free choice to have the opportunity to ‚looking into himself‘.
In this report we will also summarize the findings of similar treatment modalities on four other sexual offender inmates who have been released from prison only two years ago compaired to the four years of follow up in the case study; each of these four subjects appears to be doing well in living a fully integrated life outside of prison.
It is ous view that the results of this study suggest that an integrated therapeutic approach, in a prison setting, can make a valuable contribution to the solution of some of the problems connected with sexual deviance.

Las estadísticas acerca del maltrato físico de los niños son alarmantes. Se estima que
cientos de miles de niños han recibido abuso y maltrato a manos de sus padres o parientes.
Los que sobreviven el abuso, viven marcados por el trauma emocional, que perdura mucho
después de que las consecuencias físicas hayan desaparecido. A menudo el daño emocional
severo a los niños maltratados no se refleja hasta la adolescencia, o aún más tarde, cuando
muchos de estos niños maltratados se convierten en padres abusivos y comienzan a
maltratar a sus propios hijos. El reconocer y dar tratamiento inmediato es importante para
minimizar los efectos a largo plazo causados por el abuso o maltrato físico.
En este sentido, en los últimos años venimos trabajando con menores que han sido
víctimas de abuso, negligencia, violencia familiar o abandono. El abordaje terapéutico
desde el EMDR se muestra como un paradigma muy eficaz a la hora de trabajar con niños y
menores. El trabajo con la red de recuerdos y el reprocesamiento de recuerdos traumáticos
ayuda a su recuperación. A través de los dibujos que los niños han ido haciendo en las
sesiones se observa como el reprocesamiento en el niño es diferente al del adulto. Además
la etapa del desarrollo del niño interfiere tanto en el modo de procesar información
traumática como en la construcción de los recuerdos y su posterior reprocesamiento. Por
lo que los protocolos de EMDR en el niño son diferentes a los del adulto para que sean
igualmente eficaces.
En esta comunicación se presenta el protocolo de trabajo para tratar a los menores
víctimas de abuso, desarrollado desde la perspectiva de EMDR, exhibiendo cómo funciona
el protocolo a través de la presentación de los datos que se han ido recogiendo durante la
aplicación del programa de intervención.
The statistics on physical child abuse are alarming. It is estimated that
hundreds of thousands of children are physically abused by their parents or relatives.
Those who survive abuse, living marked by the emotional trauma remains long
after the physical consequences are gone. Often the emotional damage
severely abused children is not reflected until adolescence or even later, when
many of these abused children become abusive parents and begin to
abuse their own children. Early recognition and treatment is important for
minimize long-term effects caused by abuse or physical abuse.
In this regard, in recent years we have been working with children who have been
victims of abuse, neglect, family violence or neglect. The therapeutic approach
from the EMDR appears as a very effective paradigm for working with children and
minors. Working with the memory network and reprocessing of traumatic memories
aid their recovery. Through drawings children have been doing in the
sessions were observed as the reprocessing in children is different from the adult. also
stage of child development interfere much in the way of processing information
traumatic as the construction of memories and subsequent reprocessing. by what EMDR protocols in children are different from the adult to be
equally effective. In this paper we present the working protocol for dealing with juveniles
victims of abuse, developed from the perspective of EMDR, showing how protocol through the presentation of the data have been collected during the implementation of the intervention program.

The current study examined client self-perception of change in posttraumatic
stress symptoms during and after treatment in three treatment conditions:
psychopharmacology (fluoxetine), an exposure-based psychotherapeutic
treatment (EMDR), and a pill placebo. Subjects were 88 patients with
mixed-trauma exposure and primarily chronic trauma response. Subjects
completed the Davidson Trauma Scale (DTS) prior to beginning treatment,
during the treatment phase, and during follow-up. In all conditions, selfreported
symptoms of posttraumatic stress decreased during the treatment
phase. After treatment, average DTS score for subjects in the therapy condition
continued to decrease, while mean score for subjects who received
pharmacological treatment increased slightly. Two months after termination
of treatment, the average DTS score was 21 for the EMDR condition and 43
for the fluoxetine condition. Results revealed that subjects perceived themselves
as improving steadily during the course of treatment, regardless of
treatment condition. These results support the idea that there are non-specific
factors in therapy (perhaps including factors such as instillation of
hope, treatment expectations, and empathy) that lead to self-perceived
improvement in symptoms. However, maintenance of perceived gains did
appear to favor exposure-based therapy as a treatment for posttraumatic
stress disorder.
