According to Tedeschi & Calhoun (1995; 2004 and 2006), Post Traumatic Growth (PTG) consists of five ‘domains’:
discovery of new possibilities in life; improvements in relating to others; an increased sense of personal strength;
greater appreciation of life and spiritual changes. The first author’s experience of treating Road Traffic Accidents
(RTA) victims with Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing (EMDR) suggests that the experience of PTG is
far wider and more complicated than Tedeschi & Calhoun’s domains. This paper reports on the current status of
a study whose aim is to identify PTG that may be occurring at any point from the immediate aftermath of an RTA
through to completion of EMDR. The study so far consists of 11 interviews utilising an Interpretative
Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) methodology. So far well over 50 PTG themes have emerged although only the
first hermeneutical analysis has been completed on the interviews analysed so far, it is currently difficult,
therefore, to establish the degree of ‘theme overlap’. However, new themes include growth ‘by proxy’ (growth in
those who have come into contact with the participants, but who have not themselves been traumatised by the
RTA); somewhat paradoxically, ‘pre-trauma growth’ apparently activated by a subsequent RTA; and a ‘cascade’ of
growth attributed to events subsequent to the initial trauma (such as the EMDR and the EMDR therapist). Some
implications of these themes are also discussed, particularly in relation to EMDR.

This study was set in a mainstream primary school in Scotland where a group of children
had been identified by their class teachers and parents as presenting as quiet, shy, withdrawn and/or
anxious. The researcher was an educational psychologist in the local authority where the study took
place. 5 primary aged children at stages P5, P6 and P7 (aged 9 to 11 years) of the Scottish Primary
education system were involved in a group process which took place in their school, consisting of
6 sessions over the course of 2 months. The intervention combined elements from Eye Movement
Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT). This was a
strength based approach which aimed to focus on positive strengths and increase resilience.
The individual nature of the therapy required a flexible model. A qualitative research methodology
was used. The general aim of this research was to investigate this combined therapeutic process
within an applied psychology perspective. The research set out to study the experiences of a group
of children during and after they participated in the process. A further aim of the research was to
explore the process from my own perspective as the therapist and facilitator.
Data was collected during and after each session and post intervention data was collected from
children, parents and teachers. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) was used to analyse
the data. Findings indicated that the children found the intervention helpful and they were able to
identify particular aspects of SFBT and EMDR which they had found useful.

Positive Psychological Change (PPC) following trauma is a developing field for which
there is no standard terminology. The plethora of labels, of which Post Traumatic
Growth (PTG) is probably the most common descriptor, arguably masks a significant
gap in clinical and theoretical understanding of the phenomenon. One specific gap
addressed by this study is PPC following psychological trauma stemming from a
Road Traffic Accident (RTA) in which the person involved has subsequently received
Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing (EMDR). To investigate this gap in knowledge, an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis
(IPA) approach was used and twelve participants recruited via a snowball sampling
method. The participants were then interviewed using a Semi-structured Interview
Questionnaire (SSIQ) and the interviews were then transcribed for IPA analysis. Key
themes that emerged included Navigational Struggle (NS) to describe Negative
Psychological Change (NPC), and Network Growth (NG), to describe PPC. At any
one post-RTA/EMDR point there was a preponderance of one over the other,
however, NS and NG were inseparable and found to co-exist along an NS-NG
continuum. In addition, Figurative Language Use (FLU) had a significant role in both
NS and NG yet was independent of both and apparently driving change towards the
development of NG. Whilst NS and NG were both post-trauma phenomena, FLU
seemed to hallmark expansion of memory networks as part of a general maturation
process post-RTA. Furthermore, there was evidence that participants were
incorporating their traumatic experiences via FLU into the rebuilding of their
assumptive worlds.
To account for these findings, an extension to Adaptive Information Processing (AIP)
– the theory widely accepted to underpin EMDR - is proposed based upon a
hypothesised Plasticity of Meaning (PoM), which is observable through FLU. PoM
predicts which, why and how memory networks connect resulting in the adaptive
processing predicted by AIP. The study’s findings are re-examined in terms of
consequential modifications to the clinical use of EMDR. Extensive suggestions for
further research are provided.

This poster presentation will present the initial results of research exploring the needs and experiences of a
group of EMDR practitioners in the process of training and accreditation to become EMDR Consultants. The
research describes the views of a cohort of 20 trainee Consultants who attended an intensive 3-day Consultant
training course in Birmingham in 2007. The poster will summarise data from semi-structured telephone
interviews to explore previous experiences of clinical supervision and changes in professional identity associated
with EMDR training to date, and the supervision required in achieving EMDR Europe Approved Accreditation. The
interview will focus on the experiences of the transition from Practitioner to Consultant. The qualitative interview
data will be analysed using Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) and the findings will inform the
recruitment and training of future EMDR Consultants.

This research study seeks to illuminate the impact of post-traumatic anxiety on elite
level competitive cycling performance. Although there is much outcome research supporting the
effectiveness of EMDR in treating post- traumatic anxiety in general, relatively little is known about
the nature of anxiety among athletes who have experienced accident, injury or other trauma
in sporting contexts. Interpretative Phenomenological analysis (IPA) will be used to gather data
from an opportunity sample of competitive cyclists who have experienced trauma during sporting
participation. Analysis of the data will attempt to capture these participants’ experience of anxiety
and its impact upon performance. This information will be used to inform therapeutic practice
when using EMDR with this client group. It is hypothesised that due to the specific psychomotor
actions necessary for competitive cycling, adaptations to the future template within EMDR will be
required to maximise therapist efficacy when working with this particular client group.

This paper is a further progress report (see Blore, Farrell & Clifford 2008; Blore
2007) on data analysis from N=12 interviews from an Interpretative
Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) study into Post Traumatic Growth (PTG) following
successful EMDR treatment. The second round of hermeneutic analysis identified eight
categories of PTG outcomes. Five of the categories: New Directions in Life; Enhancement of
Social Development; Enhancement of Personal Development; Appreciation of Life and
Spiritual & Philosophical Development, are consistent with the five factor analysis categories
of the Post Traumatic Growth Inventory (PTGI)(Tedeschi & Calhoun 1996). The remaining
three categories are: Development of ‘Success Heuristic’; Expression of Positive Emotions;
and Growth Aspirations which can be seen as yet-to-be-attained PTG. One implication of
these categories is that positive outcomes of EMDR are consistently being under-reported in
the scientific literature simply because evidence-based practice is focussed solely on
reducing negative symptomatology.

This study explored the subjective experiences of children from 10 to 16 years who
had completed an episode of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy
for the treatment of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) following a single traumatic incident.
Interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) was used to elucidate the participants’ understanding
of the effect of the EMDR therapy on their recovery from PTSD. Three super-ordinate themes are
identified describing how the participants engaged in the therapy, were assisted to keep going and
what they made of the EMDR process. Results suggest that difficulties in engaging in the therapy
were overcome by a combination of desperation and determination to get better, support of family
and friends, the credibility of the therapist and finding that they started to feel better after about
two sessions. EMDR was perceived as a surprisingly effective therapy in the light of almost universal
initial scepticism, and an approach that generally did not require a conscious effort by the participant
to make it work.
