Abstract:
Tijdens deze workshop zal een uitgebreide videopresentatie over een EMDR-behandeling bij complexe PTSS. Bijzonder is dat de EMDR wordt uitgevoerd in een klinische setting met de psychomotore therapeut als co-therapeut. Mariëtte Groenendijk en Marieke van de Hoven zullen ingaan op hun ervaringen met ernstig getraumatiseerde patiënten en de 'beren op de weg' die daarbij kunnen optreden zoals dissociatie, uitvalsverschijnselen en herbelevingen.

During this workshop will provide a comprehensive video presentation on an EMDR treatment for complex PTSD. Particularly is that EMDR is conducted in a clinical setting with the psychomotor therapist as co-therapist. Mariette Groenendijk and Marieke of the Courts will discuss their experiences with severe traumatized patients and the "pitfalls" that might occur as dissociation, reliving and failure phenomena.

Abstract:
The Mental Health Treatment Supervisor at the Danville Center for Adolescent Females where I worked previously is a secure, residential treatment program for girls between ages 14 and 18 who have been adjudicated by the courts. Residents are supervised at all times. There is almost continuous interaction with staff, except for brief periods when residents are expected to work on clinical issues in their rooms. Doors to rooms are always open during waking hours, with 15-minute checks performed. Residents deemed to be at risk of hurting themselves or others can be placed on one-to-one supervision. If a resident become physically aggressive or is threatening to herself or others, she can be restrained.

Abstract:
The prevalence of co-occurring Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Substance Use Disorder (SUD) in the criminal justice system is a serious issue for both men and women. The inattention to trauma before, during, and after involvement in the criminal justice system is problematic. Some research suggests that trauma-related disorders among those with SUD negatively affect post-incarceration outcomes (Kubiak, 2004). Therefore, from a practice and policy perspective, interventions addressing these co-occurring disorders should be made available to men and women within the criminal justice system. Current research recommends a phased and integrated treatment approach for co-occurring PTSD and SUD. SAMHSA (2005) reports that the integration of substance abuse treatment and mental health services for persons with co-occurring disorders (COD) has become a major treatment initiative. The specific Integrated Trauma Treatment Program (ITTP) described in this report is one possible treatment approach for this challenging population. This report will outline the rationale for the ITTP implemented in the Thurston County Drug Court Program (TCDCP) in Olympia, WA. In addition, it is hoped that results from this project will be considered when making policy recommendations for Drug Courts and other programs in the criminal justice system, as well as other public and private substance abuse treatment settings.

Questions have arisen about the use of EMDR in the courts and the comparison to hypnosis. So far EMDR is not well enough known to have been tested in court; it is simply described under the rubric of cognitive- behavioral techniques (as it is for insurance purposes). However, I want to make sure everyone realizes that just because a scene emerges during an EMDR session, does not mean that it is "true" in a literal sense. Things can be "truly experienced without having actually happened.
