Abstract:
The functions of EMDRIA Approved Consultants include the provision of consultation and supervision. While consultation is not the same as supervision, there is some overlap and legal implications, with the ultimate goal being to ensure competent treatment of clients. This workshop will address methods to examine and assess the applicants’ developmental abilities regarding quality consultation, case conceptualization skills, as well as knowledge and ability to implement the EMDR treatment model. This workshop also seeks to build upon the skills that current consultants already possess, refining and upgrading their competencies in effectively assessing applicants in the above areas.

Abstract:
Whenever an EMDR treatment session becomes problematic, consider this self-administered instrument when reflecting on this session. EMDR consultants can also use this measure in their consulting groups to assist consultees in understanding when work with clients have an impact on the clinician. The purpose of using the Clinician Awareness Questionnaire includes the following: (1) To assist in raising awareness of what may be triggering the clinician; (2) To assess what may be coming from the clinician and what may be coming from the client; and (3) To develop EMDR Relational Strategies. Different problems can arise in different phases of the protocol. Sometimes, problems for the clinician may occur in Phase 1 when a client shares information that evokes negative arousal; or Phase 2 when the client has trouble understanding the elements of preparation or wants to get going processing trauma prematurely and the clinician has a negative response; or Phase 3 when there is a problem structuring the Assessment piece. Sometimes, client information may not evoke negative arousal in the clinician until Phase 4 when the client is actively processing. Often times, the clinician's triggers are from old memories. These memories may be explicit; at other times, implicit (somatosensory). As clinicians begin to notice these moments in themselves, they may aid themselves and their clients in continuing productive processing by using the Clinician Awareness Questionnaire. Abstract:
Clinicians who have grown to accept and support Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) have begun to diversify the types of trauma populations in which EMDR is applied. Psychology of injury researchers have suggested, on the basis of their work, that an exciting new direction in sport psychology is the implementation and testing of new interventions aimed at modifying risk factors for athletes. It has also been suggested that extant models of athletic injury may reasonably be re-interpreted to account for other traumatic stressors, additional to injury, in sport. EMDR may reduce stress and trauma reactions in sport participants. EMDR, however, has been developed as a clinical tool and there are limitations on entrance to training in the approach. There are myriad ways, however, in which valuable partnerships may be formed, among psychologists, sport psychologists, and educational sport psychology consultants to use EMDR on behalf of clients. This symposium, within its five sections, will report on many such collaborations. The following are the objectives of the session: (a) provide a brief overview of the research and theory base for EMDR and its use in performance work; (b) describe case reports of successful partnerships among EMDR-trained sport psychologists and variably trained professionals from sport performance.

This article, condensed from Chapter 14 of A Guide to the Standard EMDR Protocols for Clinicians, Supervisors, and Consultants (Leeds, 2009), examines applying eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) to treating individuals with panic disorder (PD) and PD with agoraphobia (PDA). The literature on effective treatments for PD and PDA is reviewed focusing on cognitive and behavioral therapies, pharmacotherapy, and EMDR. Case reports and controlled studies of EMDR treatment of PD and PDA are examined for lessons to guide EMDR clinicians. Two model EMDR treatment plans are presented: one for cases of simple PD without agoraphobia or other co-occurring disorders and the other for cases of PDA or PD with co-occurring anxiety or Axis II disorders. Most therapists are confronted with feelings of insufficiency, helplessness and even anger if a therapy is not successful. Feelings of shame often prevent the therapist to come in contact with his own countertransference during a supervision session. Supervisors often get lost in analyzing history details and making interpretations or offering tools, but they sometimes fail to help the therapists to get in touch with their own feelings. Therefore, a “stuck” therapeutic process is probably followed (or actually “mirrored”) by a “stuck” in supervision process. In this workshop we will demonstrate how we can utilize the EMDR-‐protocol in difficult supervision or intervision cases, in order to overcome impasses in therapeutic processes, negative emotions or beliefs, matters of countertransference and secondary traumatization of the therapist. Case examples will show how utilizing EMDR in supervision can lead to a sudden change of feelings towards the client and to a deeper understanding of his attitude, show the connection to the therapists blocking issues, and therefore re-‐enable conscious empathy. The presentation of a specially modified EMDR – Supervision-‐ Protocol and case examples will be followed by a live demonstration. The workshop is addressed to all clinicians who work as supervisors. The modified EMDR-‐Supervision-‐Protocol can be used by all EMDR-‐Practitioners (NOT only accredited consultants!), whereas their supervisors do not necessarily need to be familiar with EMDR.

Theoretical background: The teaching of a “safe place installation protocol” forms part of the standard EMDR training and for my EMDR practitioners and consultants alike it belongs to their repertoire of EMDR treatment techniques. Such a protocol requires clients to access and identify with an experienced place of safety in their lives. Complex (i.e., Type II) trauma clients, as well as other clients which have not been able to build a secure, positive sense of inner self, as a result of their unsafe experiences during most of all of their life, however, may find it very difficult to access and identify a safe place, which they can draw on during the use of EMDR safe place installation protocol. The standard safe pace installation protocol therefore frequently does not work for these clients. Yet, it is suggested in this presentation that access to the inner ‘safe place’ resource can be of particular therapeutic benefit for this client group. In recognition of the need for such a resource, Dr. Herbert has developed an alternative version of an EMDR-based safe place installation protocol, which draws on all sensory modalities (involving, cognitive, emotional and somatic systems) that will work with clients who have no known prior access to a place of safety in their lives.
Aim of presentation: The conference audience will have the unique opportunity to experience Dr. Herbert’s safe place installation protocol’ during an in-vivo EMDR demonstration session. Suggested variations of the protocol tailored to individual client differences and clinical applications for the use of such a resource with this client group will also be explored. The latter will include use of the protocol as an inner anchoring point that clients can access and connect to in situations of crisis in their daily life and as an aid to facilitate the rebalancing of nervous system functioning.

The research describes the views of a cohort of 20 trainee Consultants who attended an intensive 3-day Consultant training course in Birmingham in 2007. The poster will summarise data from semi-structured telephone interviews to explore previous experiences of clinical supervision and changes in professional identity associated with EMDR training to date, and the supervision required in achieving EMDR Europe Approved Accreditation. The very thought of not being in control of an experience is, to some clients/employees, an incredibly difficult concept to grasp. Train drivers who, like ship's captains and aeroplane pilots, have very specific roles and responsibilities have undergone training which will have included specific operational, legal and social requirements to 'be in control at all times'. Even, it would appear, when their beliefs are shattered such as in the case of train drivers and railway suicides. Clinically this situation presents as a wish to presewe the belief of 'being in control' by not disclosing memories. This could cause problems with clients being labelled as non-compliant or dropping out of treatment. A technique for using EMDR tlgt allows treatment to proceed under these circumstances is described, the experience being gained during the treatment of 28 traumatised train crew who wished to 'remain in control' of their traumatic memories (i.e. not disclose traumatic experiences even to the therapist), because - as it transpired -of emotions of shame, guilt, and embarrassment or perceptions of blame. The second part of the presentation gives delegates a mini-practicum experience to try the technique out for themselves under the auspices of two EMDR Consultants.

Most Approved Consultants have identified a significant need to define “standards” for each level of EMDRIA credentialing. Currently, EMDRIA only requires documentation of consultation hours and continued education credits. These are not proficiency-based requirements hence no consistent standards are defined, suggested or upheld. One consideration is the Core Competency Model as a theoretical framework to help explore setting credentialing standards. In this workshop, this Model will be explained briefly as well as how it could be applied to setting standards. According to this model, highly effective therapists think, act and reflect differently than less effective therapists. Using this framework, the essential competencies (i.e., knowledge, skills and attitudes) to be demonstrated at each level of credentialing will be explored. Objective Main objective is to study the therapeutic responses of EMDR on the survivors of earthquake North of Pakistan in Kashmir. This study is carried on the spinal injury patients of National Institute Rehabilitation Medicine (NIRM), which is a 160 bed hospital in Islamabad. It has a spinal injury unit which established after the earthquake in February 2006. All the female patients suffering from spinal injury earthquake were shifted here. Physically injured patients who also fulfilled the criteria of PTSD according ICD10 were offered the treatment with EMDR. Patients who consented were seen by EMDR practitioner(level 2). Sessions of EMDR as per protocol of 8 stages were carried out. The number of sessions varied according severity of illness and degree of improvement. EMDR practitioner was supervised by EMDR consultants through email and telephony. It is a part of ongoing EMDR training programme. Paper also discusses the problems while seeing patients and benefits of distance supervision. It also describe case study of 2 patients. Initially 15 patients consented for treatment. However 10 patients completed the sessions and showed improvements their symptoms. Their weeping and sleep problems settled. Their social and interpersonal functioning improved. Marked reduction is seen in level of distress. EMDR has proven to be an effective non pharmacological intervention in terms of PTSD in people suffering from co-morbid physical and psychological conditions earthquake. Data presented is only preliminary and based on a small number out of a large segment.

The Consultants Day workshop presents a new EMDR protocol for recent events called the Recent Traumatic Episode Protocol (R-TEP). This protocol evolved from the authors and other colleagues' experience following the 2006 Lebanon war. Examining existing Early EMDR Interventions (EEIs) lead them to develop a conceptual model which could incorporate and extend existing EEIs to suggest this more comprehensive protocol.
