The descendants of the political persecution by the SED dictatorship in the GDR are in many ways involved in the history
of the persecution of their parents. 20 years after the “Wende” the reconstruction of parental distress is distinguished by
a high degree of protracted non - determinability. The descendants own traumatic experiences often join fragmented,
unsettling memory segments of the parental generation. Confusing persecution practices of the Stasi have often caused
grave personal uncertainties and as a consequence, have spread doubts until today about the reliability of autobiographical
memories. Internal decision making and processing while living under the conditions of a dictatorship - which included how
to deal with their own children, and the external influences of the persecuted parental generation are, from the viewpoint
of the descendants, difficult to distinguish from each other. A successful EMDR treatment is - in case of the emotional
distress of the descendants of political traumatised people - connected to a process of resolving perplex memory contents. Perpetrator-victim-collusions, which are often found in affected families, add to a concatenation of cumulative traumatic
events. The non - determinability in the reconstruction of traumatic experiences cause the formation of traumatic complexes
which negatively influence future events in the life of the descendants. Based on interview details of a qualitative study
with descendants of victims of political persecution by the SED dictatorship in which the possibilities of handling the more
difficult determination of initial traumatic events are discussed. By means of this the author clarifies the central themes of a
disconcerting reconstruction of the victim’s parental and own biography.

The treatment of complex traumatized patients is difficult.
Especially during long term treatments it is not easy for
the chronically traumatized individuals to tolerate the exhausting
confrontation with the trauma during the EMDR standard

recognize the severity of what happened to them. Many have
problems with their compromised feelings of self-worth. Those
and other clinical problems are the reason to look for alternative
EMDR techniques. The Four-Field-Technique. one of the techniques of EMDR.
could be a good approach to solve some of these problems.
It was developed by Jarero et al, as a group protocol which
followed the 8 phases of the standard EMDR protocol (STDP).
Different from the STDP is that the moment of greatest distress
is drawn on a sheet of paper (after drawing a resource image
before and installing it with (bilateral: butterfly hugs. Different
from the group protocol patients some benefit greatly from the
individual application of the technique.
In this lecture the long term treatment of a patient with a dissociative
disorder is reported. Thereby the different phases of trauma
treatment will be demonstrated via spates of pictures. The four field-
technique itself will be explained as well as the difference to
the standard protocol of EMDR as the patient experienced.

Notre expérience comprend 24 patients avec un niveau élevé de troubles psychologiques liés à la NAF. Seuls les patients avec expérience dissociative échelle score inférieur à 25 ont été considérés.
Nous utilisons l'approche thérapie EMDR suivant les 8 étapes du protocole standard.
Nous recevons toute l'histoire chronologique du patient, «de la naissance à aujourd'hui», permet nous permet d'identifier une moyenne de sept objectifs principaux.
Pour être capable de transmuer la NAF à une résolution d'adaptation, nous introduisons un des noms de ressources notamment l '«archaïsme», définie comme «la partie de l'être humain en charge de Live principe de préservation."
Nous l'accès au réseau d'information dysfunctionally stockée par le biais des objectifs.
Nous stimulons le système de traitement de l'information et de la maintenir en forme dynamique avec tactiles et autres additifs stimulations bilatérales. Nous passons l'information par le suivi du processus de libre-association et de lancement des procédures pour s'assurer que la cible transmue à une résolution adaptative.
Comme mesure psychométrique et méthode d'évaluation, nous utilisons l'échelle PCL-S sur les traumatismes exprimé par le patient au début de MED immersion. Le score moyen est de 70 degrés avant l'immersion elle à 28 deux mois plus tard et à 26 six mois plus tard.

Some patients present with “poly traumatism” or “psychic poisoning” as described by Jacques Roques in “guérir avec l”EMDR.” Often it is a socio cultural environment started during childhood. Based on the hypothesis formulated by Francine Shapiro that trauma could engender “blocked neuronal networks,” we assume a “formatting” could occur during the childhood learning period.
Exposed to insidious and repetitive trauma, a virgin young brain stores neuronal networks related to the child vulnerability as defense mechanism. That could get blocked by repetitive disturbances creating psychological pain. As an adult, this blocker neuronal network, stimulated by trigger express excessive behaviors and strong emotion we called the “Non Adapted Formatting” (NAF).
We know how difficult it is to take this “poisoning” in charge with traditional EMDR sessions because of the multimodal components interfering. Usually, they involved mixed emotions related to security, self esteem and free choice. Therefore, we developed a particular modality: EMDR Immersion that is an intensive, 10 consecutive days of therapy with the patient. “The clinical goal is to address the dimensions of personal growth and development along with the elimination of over suffering” (Francine Shapiro).
Our experience includes 24 patients with a high level of psychological disturbance related to the NAF. Only patients with Dissociative Experience Scale score less than 25 were considered.
We use EMDR therapy approach following the 8 phases of the standard protocol.
We receive the complete chronological story of the patient, “from birth to now,” allows allows us to identify an average of seven main targets.
To be able to transmute the NAF to an adaptive resolution, we introduce a particular resource names “Archaism” defined as “Part of the human being in charge of Live Principle Preservation.”
We access the dysfunctionally stored information network through the targets.
We stimulate the information-processing system and maintain it in dynamic form with tactile and additive alternative bilateral stimulations. We move the information by monitoring the free-association process and initiating procedures to make sure that the target transmutes to an adaptive resolution.
As psychometric measurement and method evaluation, we use PCL-S Scale on the traumatisms expressed by the patient at the beginning of MED Immersion. The average score is at 70 before Immersion it degrees to 28 two months later and to 26 six months later.
Regarding the encouraging results, we decide to share the experiment in order to upgrade it.

Therapists who come
into contact with traumatised individuals are at risk of absorbing their distress resulting in
their own psychological injury. There is a variety of factors that increase the likelihood of
this happening and it can be argued that the EMDR therapist is exposed to many more of
these factors than the generic therapist or counsellor. The presenters hope to raise
awareness of these risks as the first step in addressing them and reducing the stigma in
admitting to secondary trauma.
As well as being provided with a theoretical overview of secondary trauma, participants in
this workshop will be encouraged to consider their own level of risk and practical steps
they can take to reduce this. The workshop will provide an overview of psychological
injury constructs including Compassion Fatigue, Vicarious Trauma and Burnout along with
a description of signs and symptoms of secondary trauma. Current recommendations for
treatment options are outlined and an example is given of how EMDR can be used to
successfully treat secondary trauma in the therapist.

Damage occurs to a child’s self in the context of relationship when raised in an environment of abuse and neglect. This damage to self is manifested through disruptions in development. A child or adolescent will be unable to perform tasks a non-traumatized child or adolescent has not difficulty mastering. These tasks may be physical, emotional, intellectual, sexual, social, or spiritual. When these disruptions become manifest in the environment with which the child or adolescent is interacting, home, school, or community, conflict arises. The conflict is both internal with self and external in relationship, behavioral, and biological. This is generally when a child or adolescent is brought into therapy for intervention Caregivers are not always aware of the impact traumatic events have on a child’s life or may not want to deal with the impact and the long term implications. The therapeutic relationship is a context outside of the system where the child was traumatized that provide the potential environment and relationship which can facilitate healing for the child, adolescent, and possible, the system in which they live.
Children and adolescents with a complex PTSD will often employ the use of dissociation as a way to cope with overwhelming events or chronically dysfunctional lifestyles. The degree and way in which the child dissociates to self regulate internal systems will determine behavioural and neurological trajectories in their life such as, how the child will cope, rupture of developmental task attainment, and it will determine what type of attachment process the child experiences. Also determined are: impulse control, sleep regulation, meta cognitive functioning, neurobiological processes and the integrative processes of self. When there is no therapeutic intervention, the self which emerges as a result of these processes is a “traumatic self” organization, that is a self structural in response to traumatic experience determined to avoid the repetition of the traumatic experience “at all costs.” The biological body that emerges is the traumatized body organized for avoidance in the forms of fighting, fleeing, or freezing and submitting.
The assessment phase of therapy will map for the therapist and client where the internal dysregulation occur, what are the maladaptive response which have been developed, and what the negative beliefs are which all contribute to the construction of the “traumatic self." There are a variety of assessment tools specifically designed for this purpose.
Once the map is established, a plan can be developed to use with children and adolescents and family for therapy and for EMDR. There are a variety of models which have been developed to use with children and adolescents to process bad memories, negative cognitions and to strengthen internal resources. EMDR can also be used to facilitate state change, strengthen self regulatory capacities, and promote integrative processes of authentic self, facilitating healing throughout self, body, and relational systems.

De stabilisatie en behandeling van deze kinderen kan gecompliceerd zijn. Vanzelfsprekend is het creëren van een veilige omgeving en een hechtingsfiguur een eerste stap. Maar wat dan? Deze kinderen functioneren soms ogenschijnlijk goed. Hun vermijdingsstrategieën zijn effectief en ze weigeren om over het trauma te praten of zeggen dat ze het vergeten zijn. Ze hebben er geen last meer van. Maar de verleiding van de therapeut om dan geen slapende honden wakker te maken is een gevaarlijke. Want onder deze ogenschijnlijk goed functionerende buitenkant, zit een constant alert, angstig en eenzaam kind. Dit kind kan zich niet hechten en dit gebrek aan veilige hechting is verwoestend voor de ontwikkeling. Dit wordt echter vaak alleen zichtbaar door er expliciet naar te zoeken.
In deze presentatie zal ik ‘De zes testen’ demonstreren, een stabilisatie methode voor kinderen en een bewerking van de drie testen (Spierings, 2008). De zes testen helpen de therapeut om te beslissen of een kind verdere stabilisatie nodig heeft en hoe dat te bereiken, voordat met EMDR gestart kan worden. Aan de hand van casuïstiek wordt dit proces en het gebruik van stabilisatietechnieken gedemonstreerd. De kinderen moeten technieken leren om emoties te reguleren en stress te verminderen. Dan wordt het hechtingssysteem geactiveerd, zodat ze stress kunnen reguleren door steun te zoeken. Zo vermindert de noodzaak tot dissociatie. Door problemen die het kind ervaart te koppelen aan ervaringen in het verleden wordt het kind gemotiveerd om naar de trauma’s te kijken en met EMDR te starten. Dan worden nog aanpassingen in het EMDR protocol besproken voor dissociatieve kinderen om ze in het desensitisatie proces te houden en wordt besproken hoe EMDR kan worden geïntegreerd in een gefaseerde behandeling.

The stabilization and treatment of these children can be complicated. Obviously, creating a safe environment and an attachment figure is a first step. But what then? These children sometimes seem to function properly. Their avoidance strategies are effective and they refuse to talk about the trauma or say they are forgotten. They have no more trouble. But the seduction of the therapist and then to wake sleeping dogs is dangerous. For among these seemingly well-functioning exterior, is a constant alert, anxious and lonely child. This child can not attach and the lack of secure attachment is devastating for the development. This is often visible only by explicitly to search.
In this presentation I will "The six tests" demonstrate a stabilization method for children and an adaptation of the three tests (Spierings, 2008). The six tests help the therapist to decide whether a child needs further stabilization and how to reach before EMDR can be started. Using case studies this process and the use of stabilization techniques are demonstrated. The children must learn techniques to regulate emotions and reduce stress. Then the attachment system is activated, so they can be regulated by stress to seek support. Thus reduces the need for dissociation. Due to problems experienced by the child to link past experience the child is motivated to look at the trauma and EMDR to start. Then further adjustments to the EMDR protocol for dissociative children to discuss them in the desensitization process and discusses how to keep EMDR can be integrated into a phased treatment.

There is currently consensus that the EMDR standard protocol needs to be modified
for chronically traumatized clients, such as clients with complex dissociative disorders, as it may
destabilize them. Therefore, therapists need to have a good understanding of the dissociative
personality structure that exists in these clients. Dissociation is an undue division of the personality
among two or more biopsychosocial systems or “dissociative parts” that comprise the survivor’s
personality. One or more of them function in daily life; others are fixated in traumatic experiences,
are living in trauma-time. The more severe the traumatisation, the more dissociative parts,
involving more complex trauma-related disorders, can be expected to exist. Dissociative parts have
psychobiological boundaries that are maintained, to a large degree, by different trauma-related
phobias, which are systematically resolved in phase-oriented treatment. Indeed, participants will
be able to describe structural dissociation of the personality as a specific form of integrative failure
that needs to be overcome in phase-oriented treatment, identify ways of relating dissociative
symptoms to the underlying dissociation of the personality, and identify targets such as the
dissociation-maintaining phobias, for EMDR interventions in the respective treatment phases. The
emphasis will be on the preparatory work, including how to work with dissociative parts living in
trauma-time and those perceived as being malevolent, necessary before focusing on the integration
of traumatic memories.

Wanneer clienten met vroege, chronische traumatisering door middel van EMDR behandeld worden, moet de therapeut vaak als een soort ‘psychobiologische regelaar’ functioneren, om ervan verzekerd te zijn dat cliënten binnen hun Window of Tolerance blijven. De EMDR therapeut dient daarvoor actief te zijn in het bepalen van het optimale tempo van het verwerkingsproces gedurende de EMDR zitting. Dit is van belang om toegang te kunnen krijgen tot de eerder gedissocieerde kennis, gedragsmatige impulsen, gevoelens, en/of sensaties, en deze te kunnen blijven verdragen. De therapeut moet in staat zijn de signalen van disregulatie (bv hyper/hypo-arousal, bevriezen, dissociëren) te herkennen en door middel van specifieke interweaves erop in te kunnen spelen, om de cliënt in het proces te houden en te helpen met het verwerken van diverse aspecten met betrekking tot verantwoordelijkheid, veiligheid en keuze.
Deze keynote zal een kader neerzetten voor het werken met complexe PTSS en disregulatie. Een aantal specifieke technieken, gericht op het omzeilen van therapeutische valkuilen bij deze chronisch getraumatiseerde cliënten, zullen kort worden besproken. Dit zal verduidelijkt worden door middel van opnames van EMDR sessies waarin er van moment tot moment de interacties tussen de therapeut en de cliënt geanalyseerd zullen worden.
In de eendaagse workshop op de maandag na het congres zal veel uitvoeriger ingegaan worden op de ‘hoe, wat, wanneer en waarom vragen’ in de behandeling van Complexe PTSS.
When clients with early, chronic trauma treated by EMDR, the therapist often as a kind of 'psychobiological regulator "function, to satisfy itself that its customers remain within their Window of Tolerance. The EMDR therapist is therefore to be active in determining the optimal pace of the process during the EMDR session. This is important in order to be granted access to the previously dissociated knowledge, behavioral impulses, feelings, and/or sensations, and to continue to bear. The therapist should be able to dysregulation of signals (e.g. hyper / hypo-arousal, freezing, dissociate) to recognize specific interweaves through it in order to respond to the client in the process to keep and help in processing various aspects of responsibility, security and choice.
This keynote will provide a framework drop for working with complex PTSD and dysregulation. Some specific techniques designed to circumvent these therapeutic pitfalls in chronically traumatized clients, will be briefly discussed. This will be clarified by means of recordings of sessions in which EMDR is from moment to moment interactions between therapist and client will be analyzed.
The one-day workshop on the Monday after the congress will be much more detailed presentation on the 'how, what, when and why questions "in the treatment of Complex PTSD.

Young children who are not yet fully developed mentally can not differentiate the past traumatic memory from
the present reality and in metabolising disturbing trauma memories. Children usually mix their past experience
and the present through play to help them connect the pieces of experience into a narrative that is
understandable for them. Every piece of trauma in the past is integrated into their life and may adversely
influence their personality formation. Trauma work with children through play and EMDR techniques can be
helpful in preventing such distortion, especially among disable children. EMDR method was applied to a 10 years
old boy with learning disability. He was separated from his family and stayed at the residential home. He had his
past experience of witnessing domestic violence since early infancy. The injuries sustained by his mother had
caused great concern for him. He also experienced sexual abuse by another boy which was reflected in sex play
with his peers. He had attention problem, aggressive behaviours together with difficulty in regulating his moods.
Because of his limitation, he preferred to communicate his emotions through action and play rather than
verbally. His preoccupation was expressed through figures fighting that typically resulted in death. During the
play session, the therapist would intermittently take a pause with him and the bilateral tapping was applied
corresponding with the event in play, for example checking through the worst event, the negative event, the
positive event, the strength, the changes taking place in their mind and the play. Most of his play started with
the fighting and ended with the good figures won. The installation was applied at the end. His behaviours were
monitored at the residential home and at the school. It was found later that he could control his anger better and
he was able to tell the caretakers showing that he was aware of his feelings and his behaviours. The conclusion
can be drawn that the use of bilateral stimulation during play therapy has facilitated changes in his behaviours,
affects, and communication.

The diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) covers a wide range of conditions, ranging from patients
suffering from a one-time traumatic accident to those who have been exposed to chronic traumatization
and repeated assaults beginning at an early age. While EMDR and other trauma treatments have been
proven efficacious in the treatment of simpler cases of PTSD, the effectiveness of treatments for more
complex cases has been less widely studied. This article examines the body of literature on the treatment
of complex PTSD and chronically traumatized populations, with a focus on EMDR treatment and research.
Despite a still limited number of randomized controlled studies of any treatment for complex PTSD,
trauma treatment experts have come to a general consensus that work with survivors of childhood abuse
and other forms of chronic traumatization should be phase-oriented, multimodal, and titrated. A phaseoriented
EMDR model for working with these patients is presented, highlighting the role of resource development
and installation (RDI) and other strategies that address the needs of patients with compromised
affect tolerance and self-regulation. EMDR treatment goals, procedures, and adaptations for each of the
various treatment phases (stabilization, trauma processing, reconnection/development of self-identity) are
reviewed. Finally, reflections on the strengths and unique advantages of EMDR in treating complex PTSD
are offered along with suggestions for future investigations.

This workshop introduces 'dyadic resourcing,' a form of
resourcing designed to facilitate the processing of very early trauma
with severely deprived clients, including those with attachment
disorders. The goal of this process is to help a client connect
affectively to the experience of being in a nurturing relationship
Through this process clients experience both roles, the role of the
adult who loves them and the role of the child who is lovable
and loved. These roles become increasingly real to them and clients
come away with access to a loving non-judgmental view of
themselves as a child. Clients whose original trauma was a result
of or exacerbated by a lack of a strong connection to a nurturing
caregiver will benefit from a variety of resources, but the resource
that is essential is access to a secure internal nurturing relationship,
which this process provides. This procedure is particularly
useful for clients who think they were bad or worthless as children,
who think the abuse or neglect they suffered chronically
was deserved, who are overwhelmed by the intensity of their
pain from early childhood experiences, or who cannot view their
child selves in an accepting nurturing way. In other words, this
type of resourcing is ideal for some of the most difficult EMDR
clients, and helps to prepare them for trauma processing.
Once developed, these resources allow the EMDR clinician to
utilize cognitive interweaves in which the adult client is able
to support the child self. Dyadic resourcing is typically a five step process: identifying a nurturing adult resource, make the
resource real for the client, formulating a parent-child relationship involving the resource, intensify the client's experience of
that relationship, and helping the client to have the experience
of both the child and adult in the resource dyad. This workshop
will address each of these steps, covering the basic principles
and processes central to this form of resourcing. The process
will be illustrated using clinical videos, transcripts, and a live
demonstration. Techniques borrowed from Eidetic Psychotherapy,
Neuro-Linguistic Programming, Gestalt Therapy, hypnotic
phrasing and other disciplines will be addressed Links to free

EMDR is a form of psychotherapy that is highly applicable to children, in part because of its structured format and it simplicity. Clinical vignettes of EMDR with children who have been subjected to single and multiple traumas are presented, with modifications that allow it to be applied to children of different ages. The application of EMDR to children of different cultures is explored. A framework for trauma-based diagnosis will be contrasted with our preset diagnostic system. The use of EMDR in a group format with refugee Albanian children traumatized by the conflict in Kosovo is also presented. The presenter discusses the impact of EMDR on his own life, through the deepening of emotional experiences and understandings possible with this form of therapy.

The prison system serves, among many others, one important goal: to separate those members
of society, who are dangerous to others, from the more peaceful and law-abiding majority. As
a consequence one could assume that the inmates of a prison from a, subgroup of human
beings, distinct by their aggressive potential. Though this is not true for all of the prisoners, it may be true for many of them. It is a well known fact, at least in Germany, that procedures
for controlling the safety in a prison, can't eliminate criminal behaviour or dealing with drugs
in a prison. One could assume, that even if an adequate standard of safety is upheld, a prison
would be a dangerous place to work in and that prison staff would be at a considerable risk of
being traumatised at work. In the prison system in Lower Saxony, Germany, between 5 and
10 recently traumatised staff are invited to participate in a group consultation each year. The
number of unrecorded cases is certainly much higher. In contrast there is not much literature about traumatisation of prison staff. On the other hand
prison staff are regarded as a population often reluctant to engage in psychotherapy and
leaving psychotherapy prematurely, without a significant treatment effect.
On 13th of August 1999 a prisoner attacked prison staff at Uelzen prison in Lower Saxony,
Germany. The perpetrator killed two members of staff, wounded two others severely and
committed suicide immediately afterwards. More members of staff suffered from the
psychological effects of the violence. The Critical Incident Team within the Ministry of
Justice provided intensive care and counselling. 15 members of staff were identified as a
high risk group to develop PTSD. 10 members of staff began psychotherapy. 7 qualified for
a diagnosis of PTSD, 3 for related diagnoses, according to ICD-10 criteria None of them left
therapy prematurely. One member of staff suffered from the effects of a civil war situation
experienced 15 years before, with a late onset PTSD triggered by vicarious traumatisation.
Only one remains out of work, but does not qualify for a diagnosis of PTSD at present. Three
are still in therapy. 7 patents ended therapy with a complete recovery. EMDR was applied to
great extent in 9 of the 10 cases. EMDR was tolerated well and proved to be fast and
efficient. Treatment effects seem to last over time. Setting the focus on the trauma and using
EMDR as a specific psychotherapeutic method seems to provide an accepted strategy with
significant gains for this population.

cross-culturally with highly traumatised clients who have been the victims of physical and/or
psychological torture. The presentation will review characteristics of torture and how the
helplessness experienced by victims physically and psychologically can help the therapist to

Dissociation is a normal human process. We all
dissociate. Some individuals are so severely and
chronically traumatized that, in order to survive,
they split their awareness into at least two levels
or streams of consciousness - one level being the
participant in the abuse drama and the other level

mujeres, y se estima que alrededor del 11.1% de las mujeres andaluzas son maltratadas),
como por las consecuencias psicológicas que conlleva en las víctimas. Objetivos: En el
Gabinete de Psicología de la Universidad de Jaén, atendemos a las mujeres (alumnas, PAS
o PDI o familiares de éstos) que han sido o aún son víctimas de violencia de género, con el
objetivo prioritario de que superen las situaciones traumáticas y que estén preparadas
emocional y cognitivamente para llevar una vida plena con el desarrollo máximo de sus
capacidades. Durante la evaluación, entre otras escalas, las usuarias contestan al
cuestionario sobre Síndrome de Estrés Postraumático (Echeburúa, Corral, Amor,
Zubizarreta y Sarasúa, 1997), pues los episodios de violencia psicológica, sexual y física
extrema que la mayoría de ellas viven, ocasionan en el 100% de los casos este síndrome de
manera crónica y acusada. Metodología: Para tratar este síndrome se acomete el
entrenamiento en técnicas de respiración y relajación y posteriormente el tratamiento con
EMDR. Esta técnica consiste en el procesamiento de los sucesos que quedaron bloqueados
por el miedo sentido en el momento en que ocurrieron, mediante la movilización de los
ojos de manera simultánea a la escucha del episodio, tratando nuevamente de revivirlo.
Aplicamos esta técnica con 5 pacientes. Resultados: En todos los casos las usuarias
superaban la situación en 4 o 5 sesiones de 5 minutos cada una, de manera que
posteriormente, informaron de que la situación ya no les producía tristeza ni dolor, y que la
habían aceptado. Discusión: Estos resultados sugieren que esta técnica es eficaz y rápida
en la intervención de sucesos traumáticos de violencia de género, por lo que resulta
altamente recomendable para estos casos.
Introduction: Gender violence is one of the most serious social problems
our society because of its prevalence (in the past year 2010 were killed 74

Cabinet of Psychology, University of Jaén, we look at women (students, PAS
or PDI or their relatives) who have been or still are victims of domestic violence, with
priority objective of exceeding trauma and who are prepared
emotionally and cognitively to lead a full life with the maximum development of their
capabilities. During the assessment, including scales, users answer the
questionnaire on PTSD (Echeburúa, Corral, Love,
Zubizarreta and Sarasua, 1997), because episodes of psychological, physical and sexual
extreme than most living, result in 100% of cases this syndrome
chronically and charged. Methodology: To treat this syndrome is undertaken the
training in breathing and relaxation techniques and subsequent treatment with
EMDR. This technique consists in processing events that were blocked
sense of fear at the time they occurred, by mobilizing the
eyes simultaneously listening to the episode, trying to revive him again.
We apply this technique in 5 patients. Results: In all cases the user
exceeded the 4 or 5 position in 5-minute sessions each, so that
subsequently reported that the situation no longer produce sadness or pain, and that the
had accepted. Discussion: These results suggest that this technique is effective and fast
intervention in the traumatic events of violence, so it is
highly recommended for these cases.

This randomized controlled study investigated the effects of eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) in the treatment of alcohol dependency. EMDR was applied to reprocess the addiction memory (AM) in chronically dependent patients. The AM includes memories of preparatory behavior, drug effects (drug use), and loss of control (Wolffgramm, 2002). It is understood to involve extensive brain circuitry, drive part of conscious and unconscious craving, change environmental response at an organic level, and modify circuits that link to feelings of satisfaction, future planning, and hope. Thirty-four patients with chronic alcohol dependency were randomly assigned to one of two treatment conditions: treatment as usual (TAU) or TAU plus two sessions of EMDR (TAU+EMDR). The craving for alcohol was measured by the Obsessive-Compulsive Drinking Scale (OCDS) pre-, post-, and 1 month after treatment. The TAU+EMDR group showed a significant reduction in craving posttreatment and 1 month after treatment, whereas TAU did not. Results indicate that EMDR might be a useful approach for the treatment of addiction memory and associated symptoms of craving.

Despite the high prevalence of PTSD in refugee populations, it is as yet unclear how to treat traumatised refugees
and asylum seekers most effectively. Whilst EMDR is a treatment of choice for PTSD, it is considered good clinical
practice to use a phased model of intervention with these patients. In this model, a stabilisation phase precedes
EMDR. Many clinicians are reluctant to try EMDR with this population for fear of psychological decompensation.
They tend to stick to stabilisation techniques. Centrum ’45 in the Netherlands is a national centre for mental
health care, specialising in the treatment of victims of war and organised violence. In order to optimise the
mental health care offered, the centre is conducting a pilot RCT to see which is more effective in the treatment of
traumatised asylum seekers and refugees: eight sessions of EMDR or eight sessions of stabilisation. The study
population consists of 20 adult patients who applied for treatment and who met the DSM-IV criteria of PTSD,
excluding those who are suicidal, psychotic, (hypo) manic or who suffer from substance abuse or eating
disorders. Patients are screened for participation using the SCID module PTSD and part of the MINI. Symptoms of
PTSD, depression and anxiety, and quality of life are assessed at pre- and post-treatment and follow-up, using the
HTQ, HSCL-25 and the WHOQOL-BREF. The pilot study is due to finish in October 2008. In this poster
presentation, we present preliminary findings, including data from the pre- and post-treatment assessments.

Background: Traumatised asylum seekers and refugees are clinically considered a complex population. Discussion exists on whether with this population treatment guidelines for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) should be followed and Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT) or Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) should be applied, or whether a phased model starting with stabilisation is preferable. While cognitive-behavioural interventions have been found to be effective with traumatised refugees, no studies concerning the efficacy of EMDR with this population have been conducted as yet. Objective: In preparation for a randomised trial comparing EMDR and stabilisation with traumatised refugees, a pilot study with 20 participants was conducted. The objective was to examine feasibility of participation in a randomised trial for this complex population and to examine acceptability and preliminary efficacy of EMDR. Design: Participants were randomly allocated to 11 sessions of either EMDR or stabilisation. Symptoms of PTSD (SCID-I, HTQ), depression and anxiety (HSCL-25), and quality of life (WHOQOL-BREF) were assessed at pre- and post-treatment and 3-month follow-up. Results: Participation of traumatised refugees in the study was found feasible, although issues associated with complex traumatisation led to a high pre-treatment attrition and challenges in assessments. Acceptability of EMDR was found equal to that of stabilisation with a high drop-out for both conditions. No participants dropped out of the EMDR condition because of unmanageable distress. While improvement for EMDR participants was small, EMDR was found to be no less efficacious than stabilisation. Different symptom courses between the two conditions, with EMDR showing some improvement and stabilisation showing some deterioration between pre-treatment and post-treatment, justify the conduct of a full trial. Conclusion: With some adaptations in study design, inclusion of a greater sample is justifiable to determine which treatment is more suitable for this complex population.

This paper aims to discuss some of the issues of working using EMDR, as a part of the
integrated treatment process of children, who have been exposed to chronic abuse and
domestic violence. These children are all in the care system and are living with foster parents
who know very little about their previous lives. Often the professionals caring for them also
have little of the child's history and many details of what they have been exposed to are not
known. The children are frequently detached, dissociated and shut down from their past
experiences, though their traumatised behaviours continue to blight and dominate their entire
lives and present major difficulties in their daily management and future planning. Their
emotional and social development appears to be arrested by their chronic multiple
traumatisation. They are also kept in transitional placements for long periods of time, whilst
their long-term needs are assessed. There is a struggle to identify appropriate long-term
placements for such damaged children as their severe multiple traumatisation prevents them
from being able to trust or begin to form new attachments or even to develop a sense of
safety. There is a nee for early intervention to treat their severely traumatised symptoms and
memories, to help rid them of their overwhelming terror and fears of the adult world and to
free them to begin to form healthier more appropriate behaviours and attachments. How
using EMDR to enable these children to develop and progress emotionally and socially
towards a more positive future is described.

Abstract:
The use of EMDR with children aged 4 years and over who have been exposed to physical abuse, disasters and other traumatic incidents in their infancy and early childhood is beginning to reveal some interesting material. The characteristics of the play and behaviours of traumatized young children were described by Terr (1991). It is suggested that the use of EMDR as a treatment approach is indicative that long-term retention for pre-verbal traumatic events does occur for children traumatised in infancy and perhaps even in the womb. This presentation presents two cases treated by EMDR in which it appears that the children are accessing and processing experiences that occurred too early in development to be encoded with language. EMDR helps these children access and process very early traumatisation and in some cases they are then able to report on them verbally. It is hypothesized that the EMDR technique helps create a verbal narrative for the early memories, and that this allows the child to process and integrate their sensations, emotions and cognitions within a more coherent personal biography. The ability of EMDR to help a child to process and bring to resolution hitherto almost inaccessible infantile memories particularly those relating to abuse, has enormous implications for the child's ability to move on and form healthier attachments and more construction behaviour patterns. It suggests new avenues for research into infantile traumatic memories and their impact on the developing child.

A number of recent controlled studies has shown that EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) can reprocess disturbing memories and bring them to therapeutic resolution whether or not patients fulfil the DSM (or ICD)- criteria of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The method can be integrated into treatment plans of different therapeutic approaches and integrates aspects of a number of the major treatment orientations. Clinical experience and EEG research show that the reprocessing in EMDR is not a trance-related phenomenon (Nicosia, 1995). However, EMDR blends well with hypnotic techniques in specific cases, especially with severe complex traumatised and dissociative patients. In addition, EMDR seems to help stabilise and generalise positive self-referencing beliefs as well as positive images, such as "a safe place", and accelerates future projectionsof new orientations and behaviours. In this sense, EMDR can be viewed not only as a method for the treatment of traumatic memories, but as a method of accelerated emotional learning.

According to Tedeschi & Calhoun (1995; 2004 and 2006), Post Traumatic Growth (PTG) consists of five ‘domains’:
discovery of new possibilities in life; improvements in relating to others; an increased sense of personal strength;
greater appreciation of life and spiritual changes. The first author’s experience of treating Road Traffic Accidents
(RTA) victims with Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing (EMDR) suggests that the experience of PTG is
far wider and more complicated than Tedeschi & Calhoun’s domains. This paper reports on the current status of
a study whose aim is to identify PTG that may be occurring at any point from the immediate aftermath of an RTA
through to completion of EMDR. The study so far consists of 11 interviews utilising an Interpretative
Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) methodology. So far well over 50 PTG themes have emerged although only the
first hermeneutical analysis has been completed on the interviews analysed so far, it is currently difficult,
therefore, to establish the degree of ‘theme overlap’. However, new themes include growth ‘by proxy’ (growth in
those who have come into contact with the participants, but who have not themselves been traumatised by the
RTA); somewhat paradoxically, ‘pre-trauma growth’ apparently activated by a subsequent RTA; and a ‘cascade’ of
growth attributed to events subsequent to the initial trauma (such as the EMDR and the EMDR therapist). Some
implications of these themes are also discussed, particularly in relation to EMDR.

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR(R)), developed in 1987 and proved highly effective in treating psychological disturbances rooted in traumatic memories. It was hypothesised that EMDR(R) would enhance coping in patients traumatised by a cancer diagnosis and / or treatment, as indicated by their subjective responses and levels of depression, anxiety, satisfaction with life, positive-negative affect balance and sense of coherence. Both EMDR and Trauma-Focused CBT are the two main recommended treatments for symptoms of trauma meeting diagnostic criteria for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
In accordance with current literature, contrasting the use of Trauma-Focused CBT with EMDR, it has been found in practise by the author that overall, clients using EMDR experience significantly less long-term distress and appears to process much more quickly than clients engaging in trauma-focused CBT. However, the effect of bodily sensations does not tend to differ between the two groups nor does flashbacks or dissociative tendencies.
Specifically, dissociation is not uncommon in traumatised clients and in clients with a diagnosis of post traumatic stress disorder. The existence of dissociative tendencies can pose a realistic problem in effectively processing traumatic memories, regardless of whether the method being used is trauma-focused cognitive-behavioural exposure-based methods or EMDR.
Mindfulness has been utilised by the Author as a stabilisation method for reducing dissociation in clients, prior to trauma processing (CEP conference – Darker-Smith, 2005) and has since been found to reduce dissociation on the DES scale, when measured pre and post teaching clients the basics of the MBSR programme (taught on a 1-to-1 basis).
Equally, the level of flashbacks and bodily reactions subside dramatically when Mindfulness is taught prior to trauma processing, compared with clients who engage in trauma processing without any form of stabilisation.
The author has not found any evidence that the use of Mindfulness body-scan increases traumatic body memory in trauma survivors.
The purpose of this workshop is to explore the application of mindfulness, through experiencing aspects of the Mindfulness programme. Case studies will be presented to demonstrate the application of mindfulness as a stabilisation took, paying specific attention to clients with dissociative tendencies and personality disorders evolving from trauma.
In addition, role plays between participants will be used to practise the skills of mindfulness in relation to stabilisation prior to trauma processing.

What a weird thing – that was my first thought, as I read a short notice about EMDR for the first time. A work in a psychiatric/psychotherapeutic day treatment programme, the number of multiple-traumatised patients increased rapidly. One patient decided to climb the roof and jumped, nearly to her death, driven by the memories of long-ago cruelties her father had done to her. With this in mind, I was conscious of urgently needing a method to treat these patients and finding something to manage the challenges of intrusive pictures and memories.

This presentation will highlight the effects of domestic violence and other traumatic experiences on children from
pre birth to 12 years of age and how EMDR can reduce the symptoms and give the subject a more appropriate
perception of their experiences. The neurobiological aspects will be discussed at pre and post treatment of
EMDR. EMDR therapy has proven to be a highly successful technique in the relief of psychological distress after
trauma. It will be shown that babies traumatised before birth can be treated as effectively as children
traumatised after birth. The impact on the developing baby will be discussed in relation to the stage of gestation
that the mother experienced trauma. Knowledge of sensory development in pregnancy can inform the
treatment plan for mother and baby subsequently. The impact of domestic violence and traumatic birth will be
explored. If untreated in the mother there can be long lasting effects in the mother, child and the parent child
relationship. Clinical examples will explain how EMDR can be modified to treat unresolved traumatic events. In
infancy and early childhood memories are stored in sensory form often with little language. We will illustrate on
video a narrative approach combined with parent facilitated EMDR in a traumatised 30 month old infant whose
parents have a history of drug use. The impact of traumatic stress on the developing brain will be discussed and
illustrated by video of two EMDR sessions with 10 and 12 year old children. This will show how the normal EMDR
protocol must be modified to take childhood factors into account.

At the 1997 San Francisco EMDRIA Conference Andrew Leeds (1997) made a landmark presentation on Resource Development and Installation (RDI), in which he highlighted a surprising and dramatic shift in a chronically ill client following and RDI intervention. While Dr, Leeds concedes he is not the first or only proponent of RDI, he has certainly done more than any one else to popularize it s use. The EMDR Institute has recognized its importance and now includes it in Level II trainings. RDI is a powerful psychotherapy tool. Its ego strengthening effects prepares clients for, and lowers resistance to, EMDR processing. In my experience, preceding standard EMDR with RDI can increase the likelihood of safe, simple, and successful trauma processing. For a variety of reasons, unfortunately, some clients resist RDI interventions. This article proposes a model for understanding such resistance.

Patients with a functional psychosis are more likely to have a history of trauma, symptoms of PTSD and may have been traumatised by their psychotic symptoms. We present an anonymised case series of patients (who have given consent) suffering from a functional psychotic illness who had a significant history of trauma with symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). After receiving eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR), each patient showed an improvement in their PTSD symptoms and reported an improvement in the quality of their lives. As a history of trauma and PTSD symptoms are more frequent in patients with a psychosis, and trauma may be an aetiological component of psychosis, EMDR treatment needs to be researched and explored as a treatment opportunity in this patient group. Objective: To explore the possibility of using eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) to treat women who have experienced post-traumatic stress after childbirth. Design: The pilot study consisted of a "before and after" treatment design combined with follow-up measurements 1-3 years after EMDR treatment. Quantitative data from questionnaires (Traumatic Event Scale [TES]) were collected. In addition, qualitative data from individual interviews with the participants were collected as well as data from the psychotherapist's treatment notes of the EMDR treatment sessions. Setting: The north of Sweden. Participants: 4 women with PTSD after childbirth (1 pregnant and 3 non-pregnant). Findings: All participants reported reduction of post-traumatic stress after treatment. After 1-3 years, the beneficial effects of EMDR treatment remained for 3 of the 4 women. Symptoms of intrusive thoughts and avoidance seemed most sensitive for treatment. Implications for Practice: EMDR might be a useful tool in the treatment of non-pregnant women severely traumatised by childbirth; however, further research is required. [Author Abstract]

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a frequent disorder. But standard treatments which neglect the specific characteristics of the symptomatology are only of limited outcome. The paper focuses on recent diagnostic criteria and specific risk factors that are likely to influence the development of chronic and complex PTSD symptoms. Different treatment programmes and techniques are presented on the basis of validated therapy studies: prolonged exposure, cognitive restructuring, EMDR, psychodynamic therapy and writing assignments. Particular attention is payed to the psychotherapy of sexually traumatised women who suffer from chronic PTSD and comorbid disorders.

Since the diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) was introduced in DSM-III in 1980, a variety of psychotherapeutic approaches have been developed to address the specific problems and needs of traumatised patients. Successful treatment of PTSD requires a well thought-out therapeutic attitude. The therapist must find a well-balanced position between over-identification and turning away out of helplessness. A sensation-seeking attitude should be avoided as should the danger of vicarious traumatisation. In many instances, PTSD cannot be treated sufficiently by psychotherapy alone: a comprehensive, multi-modal treatment plan may include pharmacotherapeutic, physical, social, legal, and other interventions. Early psychotherapeutic interventions in the immediate aftermath of a traumatic event follow the rules of crisis intervention (immediacy, focus on the current problems, time limitation). Special attention should be paid to the issues of developing a trusting therapeutic relationship, creating an atmosphere of safety, helping the patient to regain control over and/or distance himself from intrusive recollections. Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) and other "power therapies" can offer quick relief from symptoms. After collective traumatization, psychological debriefings are widely used, although the evidence for their usefulness in preventing PTSD is questionable. In patients with chronic PTSD, the psychotherapist should not work exclusively on the traumatic event and its sequelae: treatment should be oriented towards the future rather than the past. Instead of exploring, the therapist should try to activate the patients' resources and help them to find new meaning in their future life. There is an urgent need for carefully designed, randomized, controlled intervention studies investigating the effectiveness of early interventions in acutely traumatized patients and of mid- to long-term psychotherapies in patients suffering from chronic PTSD. Furthermore, future studies should include psychodynamic approaches as well as multimodal treatment protocols, and elaborate more sophisticated clinical endpoints. The very thought of not being in control of an experience is, to some
clients/employees, an incredibly difficult concept to grasp. Train drivers who, like
ship's captains and aeroplane pilots, have very specific roles and responsibilities
have undergone training which will have included specific operational, legal and
social requirements to 'be in control at all times'. Even, it would appear, when
their beliefs are shattered such as in the case of train drivers and railway
suicides. Clinically this situation presents as a wish to presewe the belief of
'being in control' by not disclosing memories. This could cause problems with
clients being labelled as non-compliant or dropping out of treatment. A technique
for using EMDR tlgt allows treatment to proceed under these circumstances is
described, the experience being gained during the treatment of 28 traumatised
train crew who wished to 'remain in control' of their traumatic memories (i.e. not
disclose traumatic experiences even to the therapist), because - as it transpired
-of emotions of shame, guilt, and embarrassment or perceptions of blame. The
second part of the presentation gives delegates a mini-practicum experience to
try the technique out for themselves under the auspices of two EMDR Consultants.

Life is often an enduring struggle for people who have been chronically traumatized. Their suffering essentially recounts a horrifying and anguished past that haunts them, incessantly. As clients attempt to hide their sorrow beneath a veneer of normality, therapists often feel beleaguered by their many symptoms and never-ending pain. Van der Kolk and McFarlane (1996) note that "experiencing trauma is an essential part of being human; history is written in blood" (p. 3). Centuries of wars, famines, pogroms, holocausts, slavery, dictatorship, and colonization brought every type of horror and abuse into the homes of our ancestors. Some found ways to adapt, but many succumbed to the horror and despair. An efficient strategic model is described, one that systematically facilitates a developmental hypothesis about the symptoms or psychopathology of clients and which then efficiently implements EMDR with that developmental perspective or template. Four major features of the model are described including a strategic history-taking format which yields a “Developmental Baseline” from which a macro treatment plan can be formulated; strategic Ericksonian (hypnotic) language to mobilize client resources and bypass resistance; flexible targeting options; and therapeutic attunement. The four features of the Model are designed to facilitate developmental recapitulation and “catch-up,” and therapeutic attunement in particular may also potentiate right-brain repair leading to increased self-regulation. The model has application with challenging adult ad adolescent client populations, such as short-term funded, multiple trauma, high-risk, forensic addicted, and chronically ill, and also with high-functioning self-referred individuals and couples.

Where children have suffered traumatic experience, parents may also have been affected by the same event and
may themselves suffer significant post traumatic symptoms. Parents affected in this way are often unable to
attend as well as they would like to the needs of their children, to respond appropriately, or to provide optimal
support for their children. It is well known that parental mental ill-health – especially maternal mental health
problems - is a risk factor for mental health problems and the development and perpetuation of PTSDs in
children. Our clinic has seen many children with parents who have been affected in this way. This paper
describes a brief EMDR intervention developed by our team for providing help to these traumatized parents. It
is shows how a brief intervention of this kind can be useful in bringing rapid relief to parents suffering from PTSs
and how the resulting improvement in attunement and responsiveness to the child is associated with
improvements in the child’s functioning.

The treatment of chronically traumatized children requires a long breath. In the first place, of course, the safety is present, and a figure for attachment of the child's interest. This sounds obvious, but in practice often difficult to achieve and / or to maintain. A good partnership with families / foster families, colleagues and fellow institutions is paramount.
In this presentation we want to 'imaginary' bring to our clinic and you get acquainted with the way we search for the most appropriate treatment environment and the most appropriate form of treatment for these children. How we make use of different treatment methods (Greenwald, Spierings, Bush) to produce a single integrated treatment model to qualify for this target group. We will share our vision with you about the impossibilities, but also the possibilities in the treatment of these children. We will discuss among others the following aspects: the working relationship with these children and all those involved, the teaching of coping, coping with trauma and how this team as head of therapists and clinicians on the clinical HBO group shape.

(IPA) was used to elucidate the participants’ understanding of the effect of the EMDR therapy on their recovery
from PTSD. Three super-ordinate themes are identified which describe how the participants engaged in the
therapy, were assisted to keep going and what they made of EMDR. Results suggest that difficulties in engaging
in the therapy were overcome by determination to get better, support of family and friends, the credibility of the therapist and starting to feel better after about two sessions. EMDR was perceived as an effective therapy
despite initial scepticism, and an approach that generally did not require a conscious effort by the participant to
make it work. Findings are related to neurobiological hypotheses concerning underlying neurological mechanisms
for the resolution of traumatic memories. Practical implications fro improving clinical practice with children and
families will be presented.

Abstract:
Two case studies from a pilot study concerning treatment of traumatised refugee children
suffering from PTSD will be presented. The pilot study includes 13 children aged 7-17, from
different countries. Along with the treatment of the children we have seen the parents. The
aim of the study was to estimate if the applied methods: polahing, drawing, etc. combined
with EMDR, will lead to improvement of the PTSD symptoms. Before and after treatment
the children were examined and diagnosed according to DSM-N regarding PTSD symptoms.
Changes of PTSD symptoms or other child psychiatric symptoms, the family situation or
other relevant facts were checked continuously through interviews with the parents.

Resource-georiënteerde groep EMDR in een Trauma-en EMDR-opleiding groep van inheemse helpers, die zelf te lijden van de oorlog in Bosnië-trauma-Herzigowina. De presentatie toont een succesvolle en indrukwekkende experiment van de EMDR-groep behandeling (22 volwassen helpers) na een nieuwe installatie ontwikkeld ressource protocoll door Lutz-Ulrich Besser, EMDRIA Trainer voor EMDR met kinderen, in verband met de EMDR-trauma-expositie en "4 vierkante verf -techniek ". Het experiment is reeds uitgevoerd in het jaar 2000 als een onderzoeks-en project te helpen door Robert H. Tinker Wilson en Sandra met de oorlog getraumatiseerde kinderen uit Kosovo wonen in een vluchtelingenkamp in Duitsland. Het zal niet alleen de techniek aan te tonen met foto's en "SUC-Werten" (subjectieve eenheden van comfort), maar toont ook de processieweg zoals de zaken er van negatieve naar positieve ontwikkeling in beelden, cognities, emoties en lichamelijke gevoelens. De "Sarajevo-Protocoll" en dat de mogelijkheid van EMDR behandeling in groepen zal zeer binnenkort het voorwerp uitmaken van een wetenschappelijke studie, georganiseerd door de ZPTN (Zentrum für Psychotraumatologie und Traumatherapie Niedersachsen), LMU München / Kinderklinik im Dr von Haunerschen Kinderspital en de stichting "Wings of Hope" Deutschland.
Resource oriented group-EMDR in a Trauma- and EMDR-Training group of native helpers who suffered themselves from war-trauma in Bosnia-Herzigowina. The presentation shows a successful and impressive experiment of EMDR group treatment (22 adult helpers) after a new developed ressource installation protocoll by Lutz-Ulrich Besser, EMDRIA Trainer for EMDR with children, in connection with EMDR-Trauma-Exposition and “4 square paint-technique”. The experiment has already been carried out in the year 2000 as a research- and help project by Robert H. Tinker and Sandra Wilson with war traumatised children from Kosovo living in a refugee camp in Germany. It will not only demonstrate the technique with pictures and “SUC-Werten”(subjective units of comfort) but also show the processional way as things develop from negative to positive in pictures, cognitions, emotions and physical feelings. The “Sarajevo-Protocoll” and with that the possibility of EMDR treatment in groups will be very shortly the subject of a scientific study organised by the ZPTN (Zentrum für Psychotraumatologie und Traumatherapie Niedersachsen), LMU München / Kinderklinik im Dr. von Haunerschen Kinderspital and the foundation “Wings of Hope” Deutschland.
