Creativity was involved in the discovery and development of EMDR which is an effective tool in unblocking and enhancing creativity. EMDR processing is an essentially creative process of healing trauma, and EMDR's therapeutic relationship is a creative process. This presentation addresses creative enhancements EMDR’s healing tools: “open listening,” eye movements, integrating music and nature sounds into auditory stimulation, and using body sensations with color and imagery. Using protocol targeting of artists creative blocks, and the trauma aspects of blocks, and the future template as a tool for enhancing creativity with artists including actors, singers, dancers, writers, and painters is discussed. assumptions while attending to all in-the-moment
verbal and non-verbal client communications, creative use of eye movements with flowing hand
movements and shifting rates of speed, integrating
music and nature sounds into left/right auditory
stimulation and enhancing of body sensations with
color and imagery. This presentation also
addresses using EMDR in addressing issues of
creativity. Creative blocks are regularly reported
by both artists and non-artists and often cripple
and traumatize the artist, and interfere with the
creativity of diallng living of non-artists. Using
EMDR protocol to target creative blocks is
discussed, as well as the contribution of trauma
to these blocks. The EMDR future template is
discussed as a tool for enhancing creativity with
artists free of significant blocks. This includes
actors, singers, dancers, writers and graphic
artists. Mini-practica and demonstrations are used
to operationalize the concepts presented in lecture and handout format.

Abstract:
In Dr. Francine Shapiro's development of the EMDR treatment method she has highlighted
the importance of the role played by the body (soma) in the processing experience.
According to her empirical findings, physical sensations can be activated by attending to
a traumatic memory, may be a component of the sensory experience of the target trauma
itself (i.e. an accident or an attack) and are additionally elicited by the resonance of the
negative cognition. Accordingly, body sensations are invaluable focal points for EMDR
processing. The clear body scan is a fundamental criterion used to determine the
completion of a treatment protocol. Significant somatic involvement in EMDR is also
demonstrated by the use of hand tapping as an alternative to eye movements as a method
of bi-hemispheric activation.

Although the structured protocols and procedures of EMDR practice have provided therapists
with enhanced healing opportunities, the awkwardness of the procedure remains unnatural to
many EMDR therapists. However, EMDR can be modified to a more natural face-to-face
flowing treatment process.
This presentation will comprehensively examine flow EMDR and its dual naturalising
components of "essential listening" and extended bi-lateral stimulation. "Essential listening"
entails the therapists accepting that all potential answers reside in the clients system.
This information and the ensuing healing process is supported by the therapist suspending all meta
communications emanating from the client. Following this procedure, combined with the
targeted information of the protocol activated by bi-lateral stimulation, allows the client to
process information until they arrive at their "essential truths".
Flow EMDR also utilises longer sets and/or continuous bi-lateral stimulation afforded by
auditory and tactile stimulation. Innovations in eye movement, called ''paint brushing", will
also be demonstrated with varied pace, direction, pausing and distance. Auditory stimulation
will be reviewed as to its current modes and tactile stimulation will also be explored in terms
of tapping, pressing and mechanical activation.
Flow EMDR also actively integrates ego state work, part protocols, multiple protocols,
parallel protocols, self questioning interweaves, targeting of present mood states, resource
activation's of locating and installing positive body sensations and body processing enhanced
by colour and image associations.
This presentation will include lecture, clinical demonstratipn, audience participation and
extensive hand-out material.

Over the past decade, research suggests
that Post-Traumatic Stressm Disorder
(PTSD) is a disorder of mood, memory and somatosensory integration. Studies with
neuroimaging and neuroendocrinology have
markers demonstrated very clear that
disorder, highlighting the understanding that
PTSD is a neurobiological disorder and not the
reflection of psychological weakness.

This is an outline of a psychological treatment approach to chronic
pain, integrated with medical treatment, based on EMDR.
EMDR consists of a combination of various elements of standard approaches to pain
management, together with innovations such as dual focus of attention and bilateral
stimulation. Although EMDR initially utilized bilateral eye-movements (EM'S), bilateral tones
and tapping are now also utilized. One of the central elements of EMDR is a desensitization
procedure in which the patient is assisted to focus on the negative thoughts feeling and
sensations associated with their problem, whilst simultaneously attending to a bilateral
stimulation (visual, auditory or tactile). This is frequently followed by change in the level of
distress associated with the problem (Shapiro. 1989, 1995).

Efficiency of the EMDR procedure is based on a presumption of neuropsychological changes in therapeutically
process. The aim of the investigation is scanning and gives evidence of electroactivity changes, during the process
and after finishing it. Method: We have recorded a continual polygraph EEG, before, in time and after EMDR
therapy, in patient who had PTSD. Results: The EEG before treatment showed background activity low voltage
20-30 μV, 12-13 Hz frequency, bioccipital, without pathological activity. Patient had prominent vegetative
symptoms (anxiety, heart rate 100/min). Background activity after treatment showed voltage about 50 μV,
frequency dominant 12 Hz which showed reduction of anxiety, and reduction of vegetative disturbance.

The aim of this paper is a theoretical and practical treatise on the synergism between hypnosis and EMDR
focused on the treatment of Anxiety Disorders such as OCD, Panic Attack and Phobia. The clinical experience of
the Authors suggests that the integration of both these approaches can help either the exploration or the
processing of the cognitive and emotional dysfunction supporting the psychopathology of the Anxiety Disorders.
This happens through the ability of these two techniques either in recovering and amplifing memories (somatic
memories too) identified by patients as the mental organization supporting the pathology or in processing,
neutralizing and integrating these memories (counscious and unconscious) till the re-equilibration of the
dysfunctional behaviour. This process is due to two proceedings: induction of Alterated States of
Counsciouseness (ASoC) by hypnotic techniques and the related changing in the psycho-physical disposition
rhythm of eye movements (EM). The changing of the rhythm of EM integrated to ASoC has some important
purposes: slow EM underline all the main and subordinate elements supporting the pathology these elements
can be processed using quick EM till their neutralization alternation of slow EM and hypnotic periods can reequilibrate
both the cognitive and the psycho-physical fields. The therapist has to pay attention in order to avoid
the bio-electrical interferences occurring during the alternations of these two phases that could damage the
therapy. Actually the Authors are assessing this integrative model of therapy.

Severe behavioural problems in children (and adults) are always inextricably linked with problems of affect regulation, the most problematic of which is out of control expression of angry feelings. Such behaviour is often seen as organically based, ADHD or ODD (i personally refer ADD: Absent Dad Disorder), and pharmacological treatments are often suggested, yet early or more recent trauma is frequently a factor and EMDR has a potentially important role to play in helping these children, through enabling old truama to be processed and helping them manage their behaviour on a day to day basis without resorting to the self medicating aspects of violence. I describe work in two school settings, an EBD Primary School and a Catholic Secondary School, using EMDR with pupils whose angry impulses have been causing serious probolems in their lives, sometimes meaning they risk permanent exclusion from school.

childhood sexual victimization became blocked from
resolution from adaptive memory networks, becoming
embedded in the emotional brain and activated by the 9/11
tragedy. This stimulated an array of PTSD and Dissociative symptomatology. In treatment he verbalized and chronicled
his experiences of 9/11 and memories of severe childhood
sexual abuse, establishing a narrative of victimization,
helplessness, and confusion about his sexual orientation
(Gardner, 1999). Furthermore, there were episodes of
dissociation revealing the possibility of alters. Attempts
to access adaptive networks using EMDR protocols were
thwarted by intractable defenses. The patient’s desire
to return to work was offset by his entitlement to Social
Security Disability that was initially denied. Working through
my concordant countertransference (Racker, 1968), I
ultimately accepted his wish for SSD, which he obtained
on appeal based upon my symptom-specific evaluation.
The patient transferred to a clinic that accepted SSD.

One major limitation of EMDR is that it is an individual treatment modality. However, individual treatment of a child may be
insuflicient, and broader interventions are often required. This is especially likely when environmental forces are unsupportive or in
opposition to the healing process. This presentation will focus on the use of EMDR on several levels in child treatment, including
individual treatment of traumatic memories, enhancing family support for healing, and addressing family obstacles to healing.
Format will include lecture, vignettes, and a video case presentation of the EMDR treatment of a young girl who had been raped by
a babysitter, along with the EMDR treatment of her older brother who bullied her.
Assessment of child problems includes consideration of many factors. The focus here will be on the child's trauma history, and on
the current family situation it pertains to treatment of the child's traumatic memories. Methods of assessment addressed here include
interview of the child and the parent, observation of family interactions, and observation of the child's progress, both during and after
EMDR treatment.
A number of interventions are available to enhance or augment individual EMDR treatment of the child. Vignettes will be
presented to illustrate the following interventions: referral to family therapy when successful EMDR highlighted the symptom's
functional role; EMDR with a parent to reduce reactivity to the child; and prompting the parent(s) to produce statements and
behaviors to be used later as content for installations.
A challenging case will be presented in which a family, though motivated, demonstrated a number of behaviors which threatened to
undermine the child's treatment. The family consisted of a single father in his late twenties, an eight year-old boy, and a seven-yearold
girl. The presenting problem was the girl's ongoing post-traumatic symptoms, particularly nightmares and social withdrawal,
some two years after having been raped by a babysitter. (the boy also had social and behavioral problems in school.) Unfortunately,
the "lessons" of the girl's traumatic experience were frequently reinforced in the family context, through the brother's bullying of his
younger sister, the father's complicity in the bullying, and the father's own tendency to be overly controlling and threatening.
Treatment began with two family sessions and one with the father alone. The next three sessions were split to provide some
individual time for each child as well as for the father. The seventh, final session included a family meeting and then some time for
each individual. Work with the father was difficult and slow, as he was very defensive regarding his own possible contributions to
his children's problems. Early interventions included delicate attempts to help the father understand the effect of his yelling and
threatening - even though he was no longer in the habit of physically striking his children. Meanwhile, in part to enhance the
therapeutic alliance, the primary focus was on direct treatment of the children. Some of this is shown on video.
The girl was asked to draw a picture of her bad dream, and then to draw it "all better." She first drew a dark picture of a large man
with fangs dripping blood. The next picture was of a nicer man on a sunny day. This activity was used as part of her introduction to
the upcoming EMDR work. In the next session she agreed to do EMDR and completed processing in 25 minutes. The following
session she indicated that the memory was no longer disturbing, and many of the symptoms had disappeared. She began to raise her
next concern, by playing with a doll and a baby bottle, and complaining that she did not get to see her mother enough.
Over the same three sessions the boy was also treated with EMDR for a number of relatively minor traumatic memories, including a
car accident, the loss of two pets, and a vision of the devil. Despite apparently successfull processing, he was unable to conclude that
he was a "good boy," due to evidence to the contrary: memories of his father's anger at him. Cognitive interweave was used to
access a sense of inner goodness. The bullying behavior reportedly disappeared both at home and at school, and he also moved on,
to express concerns about missing his mother.
Treatment was interrupted due to a change in insurance coverage, so continued treatment and follow-up was not accomplished. This
case illustrates some ways that EMDR can be enlisted to address aspects of the family context which may constitute obstacles to
healing. The girl's brother was treated with EMDR to reduce his mistreatment of her; and the boy's sense of badness, largely gained
by interaction with his father, was overcome by accessing internal resources in the absence of parental support. In conclusion,
EMDR can play multiple roles in both the diagnosis and treatment of family obstacles to healing.

In my current position as a clinical psychologist based on a hlgh school campus, I often have occasion to meet with adolescents
who are suicidal, some having recently made suicidal gestures. Despite the complexity and variety of presenting issues, there is
a set of more or less standardized steps to follow to ensure safety as well as appropriate follow-up. In this paper I present a case
to illustrate how I have integrated EMDR. This approach to teen suicidality uses several elements of the motivation - anger -
trauma therapy (MATT) approach for teens with conduct disorder, which has been described in detail elsewhere (Greenwald
1998, 1999, in press).
In addition to the standard crisis interventions - letting the client talk out the problem, contracting for safety, implementing
supports and restrictions as needed, and arranging follow-up - I have been using EMDR in various ways to enhance present
safety as well as subsequent resiliency. For example: the Choices Have Consequences intervention (cited above, described
below) helps the client to realize that self-harm leads to a poor outcome despite its initial appeal; the standard use of EMDR can
help to reduce vulnerability to the type of stressor which led to the current crisis; and the Future Movies intervention (also cited
above and described below) helps to create a more hopeful long-term perspective while enhancing coping skills.

Treatment fidelity is of primary concern in treatment research, because unless the specified
treatment is being properly implemented, the study’s findings cannot be interpreted. In addition to
the “gold standard” of videotaping sessions for later supervision and fidelity rating - which is costly
and labor-intensive - there are many procedures to support treatment fidelity, including manualizing
the treatment, providing training, and providing supervision. I have developed a “session checklist”
form as another tool in support of treatment fidelity. This form, keyed to the steps specified in the
treatment manual, prompts the therapist to implement each component of the intervention, to take
notes along the way, and to check off those steps which were completed. This form supports
treatment fidelity by reminding the therapist what to do, and by serving as an organized record of

The Fairy Tale Model and MASTR Protocol in the treatment of traumas in youths were both developed by Dr. Ricky Greenwald. This symposium presents data from treatment studies of (1) sex offenders, (2) mentally ill substance abusers, and (3) acting-out youth in care. These populations have in common low affect tolerance, severe problem behaviors, and involvement in “the system”. Each treatment used a population-specific phase model approach including motivational interviewing, skills training, and trauma resolution (EMDR). This trauma-informed phase treatment approach appears to represent an advance in helping these treatment-resistant populations. Discussion will focus on the relationship between the client characteristics and treatment approaches in common across studies.

The current study examined client self-perception of change in posttraumatic
stress symptoms during and after treatment in three treatment conditions:
psychopharmacology (fluoxetine), an exposure-based psychotherapeutic
treatment (EMDR), and a pill placebo. Subjects were 88 patients with
mixed-trauma exposure and primarily chronic trauma response. Subjects
completed the Davidson Trauma Scale (DTS) prior to beginning treatment,
during the treatment phase, and during follow-up. In all conditions, selfreported
symptoms of posttraumatic stress decreased during the treatment
phase. After treatment, average DTS score for subjects in the therapy condition
continued to decrease, while mean score for subjects who received
pharmacological treatment increased slightly. Two months after termination
of treatment, the average DTS score was 21 for the EMDR condition and 43
for the fluoxetine condition. Results revealed that subjects perceived themselves
as improving steadily during the course of treatment, regardless of
treatment condition. These results support the idea that there are non-specific
factors in therapy (perhaps including factors such as instillation of
hope, treatment expectations, and empathy) that lead to self-perceived
improvement in symptoms. However, maintenance of perceived gains did
appear to favor exposure-based therapy as a treatment for posttraumatic
stress disorder.

Grief and depression are life experiences that are challenging for coping and challenge the already established equilibrium states. The links are becoming increasingly evident between these experiential states and the presence of defective mechanisms of information processing emphasize the importance of providing psychotherapeutic services, such as the EMDR approach that addresses these needs and these specific processes. Our presentation will highlight: 1) the importance of protocols and basic principles of the EMDR approach as a model for the integration of psychotherapy process 2) research that explores the dysfunctional mechanisms of memory networks involved in the work of mourning and 3) applications of EMDR protocols specific for the various stages of grief. The experiential part of this presentation will explore some of the factors adaptive to the renewal of this lost balance and strengthening mechanisms associated with resilience. (All levels)

The experience of safety associated with a secure attachment is essential in promoting social engagement. Social engagement requires the capacity to identify, tolerate and communicate our emotional states. This poster illustrates the pathogenic role that relational trauma plays in thwarting such intrapersonal attunement necessary for interpersonal integration. In particular, disorganized attachment experiences are highlighted as small-t traumas and “touchstone memories” related to “affect phobias”. These phobias are key psychopathological agents that maintain dissociative barriers between components of internal working models of self and other involved in attachment relationships.
Internal working models related to disorganized attachment experiences include segregated information of parent/child interactions in which the parent is the “source and solution of the child’s fright”. The establishment of “trauma coded” internal working models is instrumental in the development of “extra-personal attunement”. As opposed to intrapersonal attunement, extra-personal attunement is characterized by a preoccupation with the feelings, thoughts, and behaviors of others and simultaneous dissociation of one’s own internal experience.
In the wake of such relational trauma, the adaptive information processing system within the individual becomes “corrupt”. The AIP model provides a way to understand the salience of dysfunctionally held information in the brain in thwarting interpersonal attunement and intrapersonal attunement and maintenance of a “corrupt information processing system”. Furthermore, it assists in the clinical navigation of the paths between memory, internal working models, and auto and interactive psychobiological regulation. From a clearer point of view and with an appreciation for the vulnerability of relational misattunement to be traumatic relevant EMDR processing targets can be indentified and targeted. In addition, this AIP conceptualization of relational trauma offers a parsimonious framework within which the effects of trauma can been seen in a variety of psychopathologies.
From adjustment disorders to dissociative identity disorder the feeling of “insecurity” associated with relationships reinforces extra-personal attunement and avoidance of interactive regulation necessary for social engagement. In addition, extrapersonal attunement leads to a preoccupation with the emotional states of others, avoidance of social engagement and substitution of work, play, food, and sex to regulate distress and amplify positive affect.
This poster will offer an Adaptive Information Processing model conceptualization of relational trauma and will outline the role of EMDR in reducing phobic responses to innate affect. It will also highlight the identification and processing of touchstone memories related to disorganized attachment experiences in both the standard EMDR protocol and the adapted “Ego-state specific” protocol. These interventions will be portrayed as necessary components of a comprehensive treatment plan in the treatment of relational trauma. Finally the successful treatment of relational trauma will be depicted as a relevant in promoting intrapersonal attunement necessary for interpersonal integration.

To the researcher’s knowledge, there is no phenomenological knowledge of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) with a sub-clinical stressed population. The vast majority of EMDR research has focused on traumatized and clinical populations, leaving a significant gap in what the non-traumatized or sub-clinically stressed participants’ experience. Sub-clinical stress includes any level of stress that does not meet the DSM-IV-TR’s criteria for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or acute stress disorder (ASD). Additionally, a gap in the literature exists in giving a voice to the participants’ experience of EMDR treatment. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the lived experiences of body sensations, emotions, beliefs, and imagery during EMDR treatment of participants with sub-clinical stress. Participants fit into either a young adult (18-35), adult (36-49), or older adult (50-60) maturity category and did not meet the criteria for PTSD or ASD. The sample consisted of 12 participants, from a large metropolitan area in the Northeastern United States. The participants chief complaints included economic stress, relationship stressor, and critical self-talk. The researcher employed a qualitative phenomenological design to gather data in order to answer the research question: what are the lived experiences of sub-clinically stressed participants’ body sensations, beliefs, emotions, and memory imagery during EMDR treatment? The data was collected using the EMDRIA approved research treatment protocol. The researcher included the floatback technique in every reprocessing session to complying with the tenet of the Adaptive Information Processing Model. After installing a safe-place and five reprocessing sessions, the researcher administered a final interview asking questions about what the participants’ experienced in their body, thoughts, emotions, and memory images. All reprocessing session were completed when the participant indicated a SUDs of ‘0’ and a VOC of ‘7’. The data collected during every reprocessing session and the final interviews were analyzed using constant comparative techniques and open coding; verified with member check techniques. The results identify five thematic holistic experiences common in all participants. The themes of responsibility, safety, choices, power, and value emerged from the data. The findings indicate a participants’ lived experience may expand the cognitive themes described in the Adaptive Information Processing Model. The themes of responsibility, safety, power, and value were targeted and reprocessed as disturbing memories. The participants experienced these themes as feeling overly responsible, unsafe, valueless, and/or powerless. The holistic manifestation of the themes of choices emerged as the outcome towards a more adaptive perspective of the disturbing targeted memories. The results of this study further indicate that it may be beneficial to address all four maladaptive themes in mind and body for effective sub-clinical stress resolution. The findings inform scholarly and clinical understanding of the Adaptive Information Processing Model concepts of responsibility, safety, and choices. The findings of this study preliminarily expand the previously unknown holistic manifestation of these themes in sub-clinical participants’ lived sensory experiences. These themes are now in need of additional research to verify and validate the findings of this study.

This pilot study investigated concentrated EMDR treatment using a quantitative single case study design with a
participant with co-morbid major depressive disorder, severe without psychotic features and panic disorder with
agoraphobia. The purpose of this pilot study was to determine concentrated EMDR treatment warrants further
research attention. The researcher used the Beck's Depression Inventory and The Beck's Anxiety Inventory as the
outcome measures. A non-predetermined treatment trial of twelve EMDR reprocessing treatment sessions
occurred at a frequency of three 90 minutes sessions per week for a period of one month. Thc baseline mean
scores were. BAI: M=38, BDI: M=49. At a 3-month follow-up the scores decrease to raw outcome scores of BAI:
7; BDI: 8. The results of this pilot study are significant in indicating that (a) concentrated EMDR may promote
favorable treatmenr outcomes and (b) concentrated EMDR may be effective in treating co-morbid major
depressive disorder, severe without psychotic features and panic with agoraphobia.

Dating back to 1987, Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) is a comprehensive treatment
approach theoretically founded in cognitive, behavior, experiential, hypnotic, systems, and
psychodynamic therapies. Although the use of EMDR with adults has received much attention
throughout the past two decades, research is lacking in the area of randomized controlled trials testing
the efficacy and effectiveness of EMDR with children. This presentation reviews all EMDR randomized
controlled trial studies conducted with children from 1998 to 2008 and summarizes outcomes,
methodological approaches and limitations, as well as recommendations for future research. Research
indicates that EMDR may be a promising treatment for children experiencing PTSD symptoms, or other
residual traumatic effects from distressing occurrences. Although promising, research warrants more
RCTs with a higher level of methodological rigor in order to test the effectiveness and efficacy of EMDR
with children. The clinical utility of EMDR implemented with children is questionable until further
research ensures that the benefits to children greatly outweigh risks.

A new paradigm for understanding psychopathology is emerging out of the convergence of research in formerly disparate domains such as neurobiology, attachment theory, and the effects of trauma. At the same time, unorthodox treatment modalities such as EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and the Energy therapies are beginning to gain favour in mainstream psychotherapy, not only because they seem to be supported by findings in fields such as neurobiology, but because they are so effective. As Jungians, I believe that our challenge is to revisit our work in the light of these latest scientific discoveries.
In this paper, I first outline what brain imaging techniques are revealing about the importance of the dance between mother and infant in the actual hard-wiring of the babys developing brain. I then focus on trauma research, which shows how the release of stress induced hormones can result in the disorganization of the brain and the consequent shut down of integrative neuronal pathways. If we bring these two streams of research together we can see how early trauma within the parent infant bond, in which there is no adequate container to prevent the baby from falling into unbearable anxiety and terror, can initiate the hard-wiring of dysfunctional attitudes and behaviours that become reinforced throughout the childs development.
I then briefly describe the EMDR protocol, which is proving to be a very effective technique in helping adult patients work through some of these dysfunctional patterns internalized in that very early parental dyad. This protocol uses a bilateral stimulation of the brain to engage a wider network of neuronal pathways to help process the painful psychological material, or complex, with which the patient is struggling. Facilitating a successful EMDR session is a little like witnessing a spontaneous active imagination as the patient weaves together the threads of a multitude of images, sensations, emotions, and cognitions into the fabric of a fuller, more nuanced, healing story of the self.
The purpose of my paper is to demonstrate how these recent theoretical insights and treatment protocols can illuminate and enhance a Jungian approach to conducting psychotherapy. What I find remarkable is the compatibility between much of the contemporary research on the brain and many of Jungs ideas about the psyche.
In this paper, however, I focus primarily on what we can learn about the complex. Drawing on numerous examples from case histories, I illustrate the effectiveness of the EMDR protocol in evoking the affect and embodied image at the core of the complex. I also demonstrate how the bilateral stimulation of the brain not only helps facilitate change but also, through the material which is engendered, gives us a window into how the complex was constructed in the first place.

Work in child care in a pubic service, brings us to accept all people who come to us whatever their origin (Mediterranean, Black Africa, Asia), their social class (from the most impoverished to the upper class), or any kind of difficulty (from school and socio-educational problems to autism or serious psychosis). We are psychologists, psychoanalysts ad family therapist with more than 25 years of experience. Through our work, we learned listening, patience, neutrality, and interpretation. While sometimes our experience brought us to invent means to come in contact with them, the EMDR method gave us another mode of relation with the child which is at the same time more flexible and closer to them. Since our training in 2004, we noticed a change in our practice ad in the attitude of our colleagues and fellow workers toward us. We would like to describe in this talk the feeling of freedom we felt to work with such a rigid protocol; to work differently with problems like drugs or sexual abuse as well as difficulties in early childhood to work in turn with the parent and the children, to work with the whole family while treating one of their members in from of them. A special variety of dynamic therapy is presented which was successfully
combined with EMDR. A new diagnostic category is tentatively proposed.
A man in his twenties, successful in studies and in political and welfare
organizations, managed his life by intellectual consideration but with hardly any
emotional assessment being at a loss when confronted with demands for a personal
stand.
He disliked his lack of integrity and indecision which he liberated himself
from during the initial three years of therapy in so far as friends and societies were
concerned. However, all his intimate relations kept breaking up. He could not account
for why and in this context he appeared to be alexithym.
When the partner left him it was a total surprise to him, he got very upset in a
diffuse way and quite bewildered. At some occasions he got regressive spells of
yelling, crying and struggling. They seemed to be flashbacks and not a hysterical
acting out.
As a trauma might be an etiological factor I proposed EMDR and he accepted
to try it. During four EMDR-sessions memories with intense emotional involvement
appeared. Altogether the material made me venture a construction of him as a baby
yelling and kicking in desperate need for a mother who kept being absent. Shortly
afterwards he entered a relation that was satisfying to both him and his partner. The
therapy was terminated. In a follow up two years later the relation was still good and
he told me that the construction had made him grasp his life-history.
A prerequisite for the EMDR-sessions and their effect was the three years of
psychotherapy with the focusing of his central problem, but the liberation from this
problem could not have been reached without EMDR -at least not in such a short
time.

Some of the earliest applications of EMDR were with military veterans (Shapiro 1995, Shapiro & Forrest 1997).
EMDR is now widely used to treat UK military personnel suffering from combat related PTSD. This presentation
will consider extending the use of EMDR as an early intervention during frontline operations. Research suggests
the importance of early detection in PTSD (Lee et al 2005) and the benefits of early intervention (North 2001).
Current practice is that UK personnel who are having significant difficulties in functioning after exposure to
trauma are sent back to the UK for treatment after a brief period of watchful waiting. This is can be detrimental,
both to the unit and individual (Shepard 2000, Solomon et al 2005). EMDR offers a potential solution to this
problem. A case study will be presented of a soldier who was suffering significant post trauma symptoms whilst
serving in Afghanistan. Through the successful use of EMDR in theatre just 2 weeks after the trigger event, he
was able to resume his normal duties and hence avoid the negative effects of being returned to the UK for
treatment. The use of EMDR as a frontline treatment has far reaching implications but currently there is little
evidence for its use as an early intervention with military personnel (Russell 2006). Future research to evaluate
this novel application of EMDR is planned. This presentation will introduce participants to the challenges of
providing psychological treatment during military operations and the potential value of EMDR in this setting.

Eerst presenteren we een simpel model hoe je naar persoonlijkheidstoornissen kunt kijken en uit welke componenten een behandeling meestal zal bestaan. Vervolgens kijken we wat EMDR te bieden heeft binnen de verschillende componenten.
Bij onze presentatie zullen we steeds praktische voorbeelden geven van succes en falen van EMDR binnen Schematherapie en bezien wat we daar uit kunnen leren.
De lezing is niet geschikt voor beginners. Kennis van Schema Focused Therapy wordt aanbevolen.
In recent years there has been much progress in the treatment of personality disorders, especially borderline personality disorder (BPD) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Especially the Schema Therapy Jeffrey Young gets top marks. In a high percentage of people with personality disorders and BPD in particular, again there is a history of traumatic events. EMDR gets top marks in the treatment of the effects of trauma. A good question is what the site is within the Schema Therapy EMDR. On this question we will discuss during our presentation.
First we present a simple model of how personality disorders can look at and which components of treatment will usually exist. Then we see what EMDR has to offer within the various components.
In our presentation we will always offer practical examples of success and failure of Schema Therapy EMDR inside and see what we can learn from.
The lecture is not suitable for beginners. Schema Focused Therapy knowledge is recommended.
